    XP runs painfully slow

    I had cleaned some spyware out of this computer last week but it still seems to run quite slow. I've followed the instructions in the sticky and attached the logs. I've also ran a the samsung hard drive diagnostic utility to see if the drive itself had any issues. In addition I've ran disk clean and defragged the drive, scanned for vundo, but just can't seem to find anything that might be slowing this computer to a snails pace.

    It's a Dell Dimmension 3000
    P4 2.8 Ghz. 512 ram

    thanks for your help

    jim, have gone through all of your logs and really cannot find anything bad that would cause the slow down of the system. You do run Norton Antivirus which is definitely a resource hog, though a good AV program.
    Have you always run Norton or is this new?

    You have some items in the uninstall list which can be removed because they are out of date, though doubt they would cause a slow down but they should be Uninstalled Via Add/Remove;
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
    Newest version can be found here; ....http://java.sun.com/javase/6/
    Download to the desktop. Then uninstall all of the above, then install the new version.

    You also can remove the following;
    Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

    You also have some items running unnecessarily at start up which can easily be run manually;
    Client Access Help Update>>>This program is not required to start automatically as you can run it when you need to. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources.

    Client Access Check Version>>>This program is not required to start automatically as you can run it when you need to. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources.

    hpoddt01.exe>>> Installed by the "HP Photo and Imaging Director" software. If you ask for the imaging software, this program will be started. This program is not required to start automatically as you can run it when you need to. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources.

    This one is really users choice. It isn't necessary but if you like it you can run it at start up.
    Client Access Taskbar>>> IBM iSeries Client Access taskbar

    I am not certain about this one which runs automatically as a service at start up
    LogWatch>>> Licensing patch for products installed on NT by Computer Associates such as eTrust. Detects and updates old versions of lic98.dll
    I don't know if it was left behind when eTrust was uninstalled OR if you all ready have an update of lic98.dll. If you do then this isn't needed at all.
    As I said, I really see nothing bad on the system. You are only running 512MB of RAM which really is the barest amount. You might consider adding more RAM to the system, it would certainly speed it up and RAM really isn't that expensive.
    Check at Crucial for how much RAM you can add to the system and the cost. They are generally the cheapest. I have purchased from them several times and have been very pleased with their scan to see how much you can add, the cost and also the speed of delivery.

    ok I got rid of the startup items you mentioned, but I couldn't find any service I didn't see Logwatch. I uninstalled the java stuff and a few other items but that didn't seem to help. So on a whim I decided to use Acronis to clone the drive to a brand new hard drive same specs and now it seems everything is working just as it should, not running slow anymore. I just think it's weird that I get that result even after running Samsung drive diagnostics and Dell diagnostics both said the drive was fine.
    Thanks for your help.

    Glad you got it worked out. You still should consider getting more RAM.
