I did something I knew I shouldn't do, and now I'm paying the price. I hope you all can help me out here.
A friend popped by the other day wanting to see how well Assassin's Creed would run on my system (Gateway FX 7020 - Phenom 9600 / 3GB Ram / 32-bit Vista Home Premium preinstalled / NVIDIA GeForce 800GT 512MB). I thought he'd bought the game, but it turns out he didn't, and he managed to convince me to let him install a cracked copy.
Yes, I know it was dumb. No, I don't usually do this. Yes, alcohol was involved.
We were playing the game for a bit, but at one point a 2 second clip of Usher's "Yeah" song popped out of the speakers instead of a sound effect. Weird. We stopped playing, and I unistalled the game & manually deleted a few files that were left in the directory.
This morning, I was reading CNN.com when all of a sudden that same "Yeah" clip blasted through my speakers. Totally random. I checked to make sure there were no popups up, and thought "well, c$@p." I'm afraid that the cracked game (where I first heard the sound) managed to install some nasty bit of malware that plays that clip whenever it does something.
A full system scan with Norton turned up nothing, so now I'm stuck wondering what to do. I don't see any weird processes running in Task Manager, but I'm new to Vista and don't really know what is "weird" and what should be there.
So, I came here hoping someone would help me (without too much chastising for being an idiot and letting my buddy install a cracked game on my system, if possible). I'd really rather not have to do a system wipe/restore.
