Somebody hacked into my e-mail account.

Hi. I didn't know where else to put this so forgive me if this is completely out-of-place. I am extremely worried that somebody has hacked my (e-mail) account and has been snooping through my e-mails. I use my e-mail a lot for many different sites, i.e. forums and sites that i use to purchase goods such as DVD's, games, clothes etc. etc.

Today i was attempting to sign on, with my usual e-mail address and password. However, it kept telling me that my password was incorrect when i knew it wasn't. So, i followed the neccessary protocol and reset my password. Sure enough, when i gained access to my inbox there was a message (from myself) saying, and i quote 'YOU HAVE BEEN HACKED' with no other alliterations.

I'm clueless as to how somebody could have guessed my password or if not, answered my secret questions and filled in the details in order to reset my password but most of all i am very worried that through this incident something else, a lot more serious could happen i.e. i get my credit card details stolen.

I have changed my password to something entirely different and sifted through my e-mail to ensure that there is not anything too damaging that could be used by a criminal. I don't think there was, but i cannot help but feel there may have been something there that anybody could have read, taken note of and then deleted so i would think no further of it.

In short, what the hell do i do? Thanks for any advice posted. I really need it.

Contact your Email provider and they can verify that you are who you say you are.
Remove any [all] details that can be used without you knowing.
Id shut down the account until you know that it safe.
Set up a new account with another Email provider asap for credit card transactions etc.
    Check.

Thanks for the reply. I have resolved the issue. It turns out that this was just a seriously messed up joke. I'm incredibly frustrated, but glad that i can feel safe about my e-mail again. Cheers...
