Windows Vista uses a almost completely different structure than XP. Windows 95 - Windows XP were about the same in structure so they could run the same software. Vistas much different which is what causes all the problems and unfortunately not all XP software and games can be guaranteed to run on Vista.
Try right clicking on a game shortcut and go to properties. Now go to compatibility and check the box that says "run this in compatibility for" and select Windows XP SP2. Press Apply, okay and try running it. If it doesn't run, its possible the game can't be played on vista. It actually would vary from game to game most likely. But since a game is essentially a program and many programs have updates for use on Vista then it would be likely that some games do have updates for use with Vista but you will have to check each one.
