Diablo 2 compatibility issues!

I just cant catch a break, okay so I installed Diablo 2 on my pc, and everything is fine until I start the game, the ground goes black with patches of it visible and then the game freezes when I leave town, im running vista and my graphics card is a GMA 950 I believe, ive heard of other ppl having issues with the game and this setup, but I havent seen anything about the ground dissapearing, please help.

I am definitely not a gamer but from searches on this problem there seem to be a lot of issues with this game.

which is the support pages for various games distributed by this company. Just glancing through the DiabloII section there seems to be a large number of problems AND fixes given.

didnt think it was compatible with vista? as most archaic titles were slagged for the move to vista because of the issues invloving the new os and how it was being held back having to cater to them. like i know my copy of old titles (warcraft 2, shogo, mechwarrior 2, diablo 1, carmaggedon, gta2) dont function on a vista.
