    HJT log

I'm kinda a noob to most of this but my computer has been doing some strange things recently and I was wondering if anyone could help.

My Norton Subscription has run out and I've been to lazy to replace it.

And I have cancelled my AOL software, but I still use my aol email address and AIM, so I wasn't sure what was safe to delete. Alot of the stuff is **** but I'd rather not delete something important.

I can tell you how to get rid of junk and old Norton and AOL stuff but FIRST what problems are you having?

My sound is probably the biggest problem lately. Some days it just wont work. I've attached a picture of what the volume properties thing looks like. I'm not able to adjust that so the sound is always off, but some days it works. It pretty much baffles me. And as well as the sound, the computer has just been a little slower lately.

I'm not sure what to do about my antivirus situation, I've got a lot of spyware programs (Ad-Aware, SpyBot, SpywareBlaster, and the AOL Spyware Control) but I don't really have anything for antivirus, so I've kept my old Norton just for the virus scan.

For the moment, I would recommend that you put your sound problem on the backburner, so to speak and deal with NO anti-virus program and getting rid of the AOL stuff and Norton first. Once you get all this junk removed then we will work on the sound problem. It may be as simple as needing a new driver or changing some configurations but the key is first get rid of the junk.

Whether you cancelled AOL or not there are TONS of AOL things still running. Did they actually aknowledge your cancellation?
If it were me I would totally get rid of the AOL, including your AOL address and set up a new address using your current ISP. They certainly must have an email set up. If the only reason you are keeping the AOL address is to not have to deal with transferring the address book from AOL, which can be a pain in the behind, an easy way is set up a new email address in Outlook Express. Then go to the AOL email and send a mail to everyone in your address book, AND also one to yourself at your new address. Tell them what your new address is and that you will no longer receive AOL mail. When you receive that mail in your NEW set up in Outlook Express then highlight each address in the "TO" section and choose Add to Address Book. Those addresses will all go into your OE address book.
As far as AIM goes, I use AIM Lite. Which is the Stand Alone version of AIM. You do not need ANY other AOL on the computer.

As far as the Norton stuff goes, go into Add/Remove and scroll down and uninstall All Norton and Symantec listings. Do it one at a time until all are gone.
Then go to Start, Search Files and Folders and search first for Norton. Delete everything found. Then do a search for Symantec and delete everything found.
I would also DUMP the AOL Spyware control, you have plenty with what you have in the others.
What about that McAfee Personal Firewall? Did that also come from AOL? If so, dump it too and go either with the built in one with XP or a free one like Zone Alarm or one of the other free ones available.

Is there any real reason to get rid of my aol email address? I can access it on aol.com and I don't think it matter whether I get a new email address or not, but if it does just tell me. I deleted all forms of AOL except for AIM Triton, which again, I can delete if you reccommend it. I also deleted all of the Norton stuff and put the XP firewall as my firewall. I also downloaded the CCleaner and the Microsoft Defender from the reccommended things to download on this site. My sound has mysteriously come back on but I doubt it's for good. What's next?

Thank you very much for all of your help.

Sorry for the delay, there must have been a problem here with the server or something.

Anyway, I asked for the log to be certain that all of the Norton stuff and AOL stuff was gone. Norton yes, AOL no.

The only reason I questioned the use of AOL mail was I was not certain if you could access it without being a member of AOL, I still am not sure but for now that is your choice. AOL "says" it isn't necessary but with AOL I am never positive. AOL has it's way of "wangling" itself onto the computer, even if you don't want it.

The AIM is no problem, have used it for years and never subscribed to AOL. Though you DO have to watch it carefully because it WILL automatically put itself into your start up programs and this is totally unnecessary, it can easily be run manually.

    There are some things you can fix in your HJT log, nothing bad, just clutter and remainders of AOL;

O23 - Service: AOL Connectivity Service (AOL ACS) - AOL LLC - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\ACS\>>> AOL Connectivity Service - starts an automatic function that restores the connection should you lose it while online. Since you no longer use AOL this is not needed.

O23 - Service: WAN Miniport (ATW) Service (WANMiniportService) - America Online, Inc. - C:\WINDOWS\wanmpsvc.exe>>>If you are ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that you are not dialing into or using the AOL dial-up number AOL then this can be fixed.

Run it again and put a checkmark next to the following, once you have placed the checkmarks then click the FIX button and exit HJT.

    Now there are other things showing as running automatically at start up in your log which are completely unnecessary. ALL can be run manually rather than have them start up when the computer starts;

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe>>> Checks with Sun's Java updates site to see if newer Java versions are available. Can easily be run manually
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SSBkgdUpdate] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Scansoft Shared\SSBkgdUpdate\SSBkgdupdate.exe" -Embedding -boot>>>ScanSoft OmniPage auto updater. Can be disabled using the main program's options.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PaperPort PTD] C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\PaperPort\pptd40nt.exe>>> "PaperPort" software associated with scanners. Can be run manually.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IndexSearch] C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\PaperPort\IndexSearch.exe>>> Associated with PaperPort scanner software from ScanSoft. Can be run manually

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ControlCenter2.0] C:\Program Files\Brother\ControlCenter2\brctrcen.exe /autorun>>> Brother scanner 'Control Center' application - can be started manually

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime>>>Can be run manually

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background>>>Windows Messenger utility. If you don\'t use Windows Messenger, this can be annoying. Available via Start -> Programs. Go to Windows Messenger > Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts" NOTE; This is NOT MSN Messenger.

    O4 - Startup: OpenOffice.org 2.0.lnk = C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 2.0\program\quickstart.exe>>>Can be run manually

    O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe>>>Can be run manually

All of the above are really your choice to let run at start or not. Key thing to remember is many programs, when installed, just automatically put themselves in start on boot when they really aren't necessary. Suddenly you end up with a slowed down start up and you don't know why...this is the reason.

I always recommend this super little FREE program Mike Lin's StartupControl Panel to keep yourself in charge of your start up programs. Easy to use.

Yes that is all I see EXCEPT where is your New Anti-virus program?
This is a must! Yes you have some great anti-spyware programs on the computer but you must also have an active anti-virus program updated and running all the time, which at least a scheduled weekly scan.
    Some good FREE ones are:

    • AVG Free Edition

    • AntiVir® Personal Edition Classic

    • Avast! Home Edition
