How does this actually work ? Or even: does it work ?
I know it's popular, but I can't find any proof it actually does what
    it claims to do.
And if it does work, how ? Does it create a blacklist like your hosts
    file ?

I don't really know how to /prove/ that it works. AFAICT it is an adjunct
to practicing safe hex. It seems most important for those using IE. See
    the website <http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html>. If it
does indeed do what it says, I think it is valuable. I use it.

I believe it is not anti malware as the normal applications. What it does it examines
certain settings and suggests ways to lock down the PC to make it more secure. And it is
for FireFox as well as IE.

I think it modifies the registry so certain activeX controls can't be
installed. How exactly it protects Firefox I don't know. I was hoping
you, David, could shed more light on it <grin>.

I don't use it since it is a prevention type utility that I don't need.

Yes. It knows the CLSIDs for various malware and makes sure the killbit is
set for them in the registry: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
    Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility

    > How exactly it protects Firefox I don't know

Only if FF has the equivalent IE functionality

Download it and try going to one of it's restricted websites...that
    part works for sure.

It adds bad sites to the registry for IE, in the restricted sites
section. It will also offer to toggle a few bits that can turn off
    potentially unsafe code or functions.

And yes, it does work. For its intended purpose, it works reasonably
    well.

Proof is easy to come by. Load the program, and try to visit a site thats
    considered bad by it.

By adding information to your registry, it creates a sort of blacklist of
bad/suspicious websites that may/will exploit you.
