Spybot and AdAware 2007 conflict

I used Ad-Aware Personal SE and Spybot for years and they never
had any incompatibility issues. When I installed AdAware 2007 I do
not remember having any problems with it and Spybot, but that was
awhile ago.

However, AdAware 2007 only lasted on my computer for about
a month and I got rid of it as I did not like it. I now use Spybot,
Spyware Blaster, Spyware Terminator and SuperAntispyware.

At this point, SuperAntispyware is my personal favorite as I have
been using it at work to clean up several PC's and it does a pretty
good job. On the last three PC's I used it on it found, and got rid
of, a total of a little over 900 spyware entries.

The biggest problem I had with AdAware 2007 was I could not
tell if it was updating. I would tell it to and sit there waiting to see
if anything happened. Eventually the update would complete, but
I hated the lack of a progress bar showing me the percentage of
completion.

Another thing I did not like was the previous version allowed you
to pick the directory, or directories, that you wanted to scan and
AdAware 2007 will not allow that in the free version. Sometimes
I just want to do a quick scan of the system32 folder, as that is
where allot of spyware files get stored, and it won't allow that.

You make some good points. I also found SuperAntispyware cleaned some
problems out very well of others pc's I've used it on.

Have you ever had problems where Spybot locks up the pc while
scanning? Spybot S&D just locked up my pc that required a hard boot.
It stopped scanning and everything froze, the display froze and
nothing from the mouse or keyboard. The cap lock, scroll lock and num
lock wouldn't change...

The pc I was scanning was clean and normally runs very well.

Let me know if you've had any lockup problems when scanning with
Spybot S&D 1.5.2.

I have used it on six computers so far and it cleaned them up
pretty well. I ran Spybot afterwards, which found about a half
dozen to a dozen things that SuperAntispyware didn't find, but
I used to get pretty much the same results when I ran Ad-Aware
before Spybot.

Not with the newest version, but I have only been using 1.5.2 for
a little over a month. I used to run into that occasionally with 1.4
and I'm pretty sure it was due to either a spyware or a virus that
was locking it up. Then I would run a virus scan, and try another
spyware scanner, and once they removed whatever they found I
was able to run Spybot again.

I know there are some viruses or spyware that can shut down
or lockup the McAfee virus scanner, which is what we use on
our computers at work, and I've heard there are ones that can
do the same thing to Spybot and Ad-Aware as they are two
popular spyware scanners.

Are you sure it is clean? All it takes is that one virus or spyware
that locks up Spybot.

None so far, just those few with the earlier version. However, I
have only been able to use Spybot 1.5.2 on six computers since
I started using it. A few years ago we had serious problems with
spyware infesting computers on our network and my co-workers
and I had to clean up at least a dozen, or more, a week.

Eventually the network administrators installed spyware blocking
software on our network servers, which does a pretty good job
of blocking the majority of it. These days I rarely get a spyware
infected computer, that is plugged into the network, since they
access the internet through the network servers with the spyware
blocking software.

About the only ones I get with a spyware problem are the laptops
that use wireless cards to access the network through the internet
rather then a network cable plugged into the computer. Since they
access the internet first, then our network, anything they do on the
internet is not blocked by the spyware blocking software that is on
our network servers.
