    Shutdown lag

    Hello again Judy.
    Yesterday I uninstalled Norton/symantec,and installed the programs I used in the past(AVG & zonealarm).Before installation of these programs I deleted all files associating with the old antivirus and firewall programs(yes I enabled viewing of hidden files).The problem I am having,is that shutdown now lags something fierce to the point that I almost wonder if the system will shut down.My last attempt to search any remnants,to see if there was anything conflicting with zonealarm,ended with a shutdown that took 17 minutes.I will post any logs if so advised,when time permits.I realize that your time is limited and I will try to get back in either tomorrow or Thursday.If one of the other admins has a trick or two up their sleeve for me to try,any suggestion would be appreciated.As for the system resources that are always asked for.

    Thanks for now and I will get back to this thread to see what may transpire.

    I still see at least one instance of Norton listed in Services;
    O23 - Service: Symantec Lic NetConnect service (CLTNetCnService) - Unknown owner - c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exe (file missing).
    You should run HJT again and place a checkmark next to the entry and then click the Fix Checked button.
    Otherwise I only see quite a few items which are running which don't need to run, some are totally unnecessary and some are programs which can be run manually.
    You will have to make the decision on whether to leave enabled or disable them;

    Dwm.exe>>>DWM.exe is just the process running glass effects. To stop it, simply disable Glass.
    Acer Tour Reminder>>> Reminder that pops up and reminds you to take tour of your new Acer computer or laptop.
    Acer Product Registration>>>Related to Acer_Product_Registration Remove when registration is completed.
    Acer Assist Launcher>>> Acer program that provides information about new updates or notices from Acer.
    WinampAgent>>>Loads the System Tray icon for the WinAmp media player. Can be used to mantain file associations so programs like QuickTime and RealPlayer don't take over as default player for various media types. Available via Start -> Programs
    SunJavaUpdateSched>>>Sun Java auto updater. Can be run manually
    QuickTime Task>>> System Tray access to Apple's "Quick Time" viewer, can be run manually
    Adobe Reader Speed Launcher>>>can be run manually
    Sidebar
    >>>Related to Desktop_Sidebar provides you with instant access to the information you most desire by grabbing data from your PC and the internet. The result is a dynamic visual display you configure and control.
    ehTray.exe>>> This startup loads a system tray icon that allows you to control various aspects of Media Center
    updateMgr>>> Installed with Adobe products to check for updates and prompt you to install them as needed.
    WMPNSCFG>>>A program associated with Windows Media Player. According to this technote, wmpnscfg.exe is used to alert users when a new media device is found on the network. Wmpnscfg is also responsible for starting the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service (NSS) and then waits for notifications from the service.

    Lightbulb

    You might have a device driver or a service that is hanging in the background causing the delay, ZoneAlarm is known to do that when the application misbehaves due to your system configuration or the program itself becoming corrupted.

    Open registry editor to see if you have the following keys/values if so then set their data to what I show which might also help:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
    > AutoEndTasks = 1
    > HungAppTimeout = 3000
    > LowLevelHooksTimeout = 3000
    > WaitToKillAppTimeout = 3000

    registry

    Thanks TL.
    I checked and did not find any of those values in the registries ,where you mentioned I might find them.As for the start up items I did disable the ones that made sense,as to not needing them to run until needed.The lag still remains,although is has improved over tweaking the past few days,to where it only takes 5 minutes to shut down completely.The desktop remains onscreen for around 3 minutes before going to the actual shutdown screen.From there it takes somewhere around 2 minutes for the system to power off completely.Since I have confirmed that shutdown does operate properly and the system starts up with no glitches,I think I can live with it,since I no longer have to live with Norton .

    I was going to say it's ZA. I had this problem with XP which caused me to get rid of it. I just run windows firewall, ZA has a few too many bugs for my liking.

    I had the same thing happen to me and I also removed it. Have been using the Windows Firewall since and have no problems whatsoever.

    ZA is a very good firewall when it works without issue but when it starts to acts up, it is a pain. I find Kerio, Sygate or even Outpost to be a better alternative. Also Comodo firewall is pretty decent.
