Jackson has explained that. Notice how I am replying "in line".

Is "sarky" equal to "polite but concise?" I even said "Thanks for your
    consideration."

All email and Usenet messages have:

    1. a FROM address. That is who sent it.
    In your case, it is:
    From: "Roy East" <royeast@tiscali.co.uk>
    In my case, it is:
    From: "Beauregard T. Shagnasty" <a.nony.mous@example.invalid>

1a. Your full, real address is visible to the spammers' harvesters.
My address is munged, using "example.com/net/org/invalid" which
are set up for the purpose of not using a real domain name.

    2. a TO address. This is who you are sending the message to.
For email, it would be: To: "Uncle Bob" <bob@example.com>
For Usenet, it would be: Newsgroups: alt.privacy.spyware

    3. Please do not remove attributions (ID of the person you are
    replying to.

You can view the headers of any message by looking at "View Headers" in
    your email/news program.

In addition all messages should have a "signature". The delimiter of the signature is two
dashes and then a space such as (without the quotes) "-- ". Below the "-- " delimiter you
enter the contents of your signature which should be no longer than four lines.

    See my 'signature' below...

I know a fella who ended up with a limp wrist doing that.

Anglo Saxon slang term for sarcasm, caustic remark, irony or satire even.

Sorry I know I must be thick, why must I have a signature? How do I go about
it? Where do I get the false address?

You don't *need* a signature. But if you decide to use one, you now know
what's right. Your newsreader should tell you in its Help file.

Oh wait. Outlook Express does not do them well. Without outside help.

    > Where do I get the false address?

    You just make it up.

Go to the settings for your news server account. Find your email
    address. Change it
    from: royeast@tiscali.co.uk
    to: royeast@example.invalid

Does FidoLook allow you to change the quotemarking character from | to
    the accepted standard > ?

Or to set line length to 80 characters or less? ;-)
