    AdAware 2007 Free

I was using AdAware SE without any apparent problem, and suddenly I couldn't
download updates. I uninstalled it and replaced it with the newer AdAware
    2007.
It doesn't seem to be as good. After using it for several weeks, I still
haven't found any "Criticals". I just get cookies. It is harder to update
definitions. And it is slower. When I try to update, it attempt to upsell
me. The program seems less user friendly.

    Two questions:
Is anyone else finding that AdAware 2007 doesn't get the "criticals?"
Can anyone recommend a good alternative free anti-spyware/malware program?
    Al

OK.....do you still have the old one (SE) on your HD that you can
reopen? I never went to 2007 due to the bad reports I kept reading and
I am able to download a zip file of new defs for AdAware SE from
Lavasoft. Just downloaded one dated yesterday.

Uninstall the new one first.....then put SE back on. Or just run with
Spybot S & D, for that matter. It finds more than AdAware ever did and
    also checks Firefox......AdAware doesn't.

    Cheers....Heather

I have noticed about the same thing as you. Each time I open the program,
the Update feature is turned off with a red X. I have to go into Settings,
and reset everything to default, close, go back to the opening screen and
the Update is turned on. Then I can Update the program.
I never have found anything (not that I want to) other than cookies. The
old program was much better in my opinion. Now it's all about the $$$.

You could always give SUPERAntiSpyware a try.
I'm not overly fond of the new version of Ad-Aware either <g>

Joan, I have SUPERAnitSpyware, and since I've had it, I have never had a hit
on anything with it, and it's kept up to date. I'm beginning to wonder
about it. Guess I should be happy that my computer is all that clean.

Why reinstall something that is obsolete and doesn't update at all?
Yes, I know you can update it manually, but who wants to go through
all of that just to sweep their computer? Not me!

It does continue to offer a manual update and I provided a scripting example on how this can
    be automated.

Like I said, who wants to go through all of that JUST to sweep their
computer? Especially with an obsolete tool. Maybe some ppl do, but not
me. Too many free up to date programs out there to be messing around
    with scripting just for updates.

According to you, however.....it doesn't play nice with XP!! So you do
your thing and I will do mine. (eg)
