The answer is to use and receive in plain text only (not HTML or RTF)
and keep the preview pane closed.

If someone's sent you an attachment, save it, then scan it before
opening it if it proves to be safe. If you're not expecting an
attachment, contact the sender and ask if they sent you something.
They may have a compromised machine without them realising and you
certainly wouldn't know.

It's easy enough to read a message, via properties in OE, without even
opening the message.
