    Windows ME updates?!?

    Hia all...

My 1st post for a while, in fact so long that I had to re-register!!!

I've promised my cousin I'd give him my old PC that had Win 2000 intalled and when I came to install 2000 back onto the system, I've realised I can't find the key. I understand the rules about asking for keys on the forums so I have reinstalled Win ME that was origonally on there. Not happy, but it's the only way to get it up and running til I find the 2000 key.

Now when I go to the update site I can't find any ME updates either. Can anyone tell me if & where to look? I've googled but all I seem to find is the date that support ended and people slating the OS to death!

Everything you have read is right. Windows no longer supports windows ME so you will not find any direct updates for it. It was one of Microsoft's worst ideas in the way of an OS which is why people wanted it to die. It's a buggy OS that rarely works like it should.

You MAY be able to find updates by googling and POSSIBLY find some that a third-party has compiled, but I wouldn't count on it.

I know what you mean bout ME being plop (to put it politely) but until my Win 2000 key makes a reappearance it's my only option. I wish I knew how to find it from the disc... I really should be more organised when it comes to putting discs back in the right cases!!!

I've just been on AVG & Zone Alarm and they don't even have downloads for ME!

Sorry Thunderbolt, I'm not sure how to pull it off the CD either. I wish I could be of more help. Maybe another member will be able to help you with this.

    See if the 2000 coa is on the box; usually the sticker on the back of the computer or on one of the panels; that is your cd key; maybe on the inside panel; unless it's an OS that you installed; then the COA sticker might be with your 2000 book. ME isn't as crappy as you might think; I'm running 9x/me dual boot on one of my machines since ME came out; It's pretty much bullet proof if you are carefull what you download and update; Turn off write cach on the drives; enable DMA on the drives; and change your memory settings; limmit the swap file size; etc.. stay away from newer browsers and newer media players;

There is registry setting that you can do to cover the spybot "spyware found" DSO exploit 1004!=W=3
    quoted from
    http://www.cameratim.com/computing/w...ng-dso-exploit

    ""Function of that registry key
It's related to the security zones section of the “Internet Options” control panel, and it controls what to do about downloading unsigned ActiveX controls in the “My Computer” zone (the whole computer). But this particular zone doesn't appear in the control panel, therefore you have to control it by directly editing the registry, or find some other tool to do it for you.

ActiveX is a programming language used in Windows for all manner of functions, it can do pretty much whatever it wants to on a PC (this is not a good idea with unknown programs on websites). The “signing” business just means whether or not the author digitally signed the code, so you can tell whether this code really came from them. It's no indication of the safety of the code (unscrupulous people can create code that does unpleasant things, and get it signed).

In the interests of safety, you'd either want to disable downloading them (for this zone), or make it conditional on your approval. But what's Microsoft's default setting? As usual, it's to let it do whatever it likes, without asking, and without any regard for safety.

Key 1004 options Key value Meaning
0 Enable downloading (without any prompting)
    1 Prompt before downloading
    3 Disable downloading

    Fixing the fault
Since this zone isn't any of the zones used with web browsing, I'd suggest you set it to disable downloading, like “Spybot - Search & Destroy” wants you to. Or you could set it to prompt you about downloading, and ignore the warnings from Spybot. Either way, this probably involves using the registry editor to set key values for yourself and the default user.

Open the registry editor and go into the “HKEY_USERS” section.

Do the following steps inside the sub-section named “.DEFAULT”, and then, again, inside the sub-section named after your current logon name. Then logon as each of the other users on your computer, and do the same thing again for their logon name's section of the registry. The default sub-section should be common to all users, and only need setting once.

Drill down through the following sub-sections: “Software”, “Microsoft”, “Windows”, “CurrentVersion”, “Internet Settings”, “Zones”, until you're in the “0” sub-section.

If there's a DWORD key called “1004” in there, set it to a value of “3”. Or if there's some other sort of key called “1004”, delete it and create a new DWORD key with a value of “3”. Or if there's no “1004” DWORD key, create a new one, again with a value of “3” entered into it.""

And here's some info about memory management for ME
