I started using a PrimeFilm 3650 slide copier and it uses a lot of virtual memory, even though I have 1.25 GB RAM in my computer. (Windows XP Pro, fully updated, with only AVG running in the background) The copies are at the highest quality settings and result in a ~3Mb file when completed, but the first slide will use up to 485,000K during the processing and leave ~150,000K residual. Subsequent copies will leave another 100,000-120,000K additional residue and eventually I'll get the "Virtual Memory is Low" warning and shut down. I've reset my paging file settings to "System managed size" and it shows 15677MB Space available, 2Mb Minimum allowed, 1870 MB Recommended, and 1247 Currently allocated before running any slides today. I've run CCleaner and Ad-Aware to clean things up, but it didn't change the situation.

Can someone explain why so much virtual memory is being used and not being returned?
