Question Program Name in Active Window Title Bar Corrupted

Greetings, this is my first post here. Lately, whenever I open Opera [my default browser] the blue title bar at the top of the screen always shows the same giberish [666:596] on the left side, regradless of the URL I'm visiting. Prior to last weekend the left side of the title bar displayed the visited URL as expected. This false title also appears on the bottom task bar with the Opera logo.

I tried removing & reinstalling Opera with no improvment. I didn't remove every vestige of Opera in the registry before reinstalling it; I'd prefer not to remove all this, if possible, to avoid deleting all my settings, bookmarks, etc. Any suggestions on how to remove [just] this garbage? Incidentally, my operating system is Windows XP home edition. TIA.

    Thumbs up

    Hi Dave,

What version of Opera are you using. To test the issue I downloaded the latest version (which is 9.02c) as of this post and I must admit, it is one slick and fast browser.

Several pages I tested seemed to open real fast, looks just as fast as IE if not faster. Anyhow, since I am new to this browser and do not know the version you are using, please provide the details on the version you are using.

But for now, may I suggest uninstalling the browser (after saving bookmarks, etc.) and then deleting both the program folder under C:\Program Files and also under you user profile \Application Data\Opera. Then reboot and re-install the program and see if the problem is gone or not...

PS. I truly love this newest version (an older version I had tried was nowhere this cool and fast). Also, great skins!

    Thanks TL,

I'm using Opera 9.02, their latest, now. I suspected the only way to get rid of the garbage on the active window title bar was to completely remove & reinstall Opera. I just wanted to make sure there there wasn't a way to clear only the garbage first. Thanks again.

    Lightbulb

There might be and I noticed a few different places that could be worth checking next time but for now since the re-install did the trick I will not get into detail:

I would examine the ini files that retains the browser settings / user preferences:

    C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\opera6.ini

From what I saw, the above file is where the settings of Tools > Preferences is stored in.

Tools > Appearance > Skin specifies the skin in use which might be pointing to a modified or replaced one by a baddie so it is worth examining this section too.

    ...and this file also:

    C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\toolbar\standard_toolbar.ini

PS. Also take a look at the screenshot, Spybot offers an Opera specific plug-in protection, once Opera is installed on a system.

Thanks for the info, TL. I just made that change to SpyBot, too; never noticed it before you mentioned it. Take care.
