I did as you suggested with the command prompt inputs, then did a restart and I.E. and sidebar seem to be back to normal.
I am still curious about I.E. uninstall and reinstall. Also your views on other browsers.

Glad the suggestions worked. Hopefully they will "stick".
You cannot uninstall Internet Explorer, unless you upgraded from another version, say from IE 6 to IE 7, then you can roll back to the older version. Internet explorer is an integral part of the Windows System and cannot be uninstalled. If you want to use another browser I would recommend Firefox. I use that almost exclusively unless I am using a site which requires IE.
