    Running two AV/Spyware apps???

I am a Mac user who recently purchased a MacBook, capable of running
both Mac's OS X & Windows. I have partitioned the hard drive and
installed both operating systems, Leopard (Mac) and Windows XP Home
    Edition SP2.

Coming from the Mac world, I have zero experience with anti-virus and
spyware software. I don't intend to use my Windows partition all that
much. Basically I installed it to learn about Windows and perhaps use a
few apps that don't exist for Macs; fully 90% of my time on the internet
will be using the OS X partition and not Windows.

I have installed ZoneAlarm, which I got free for one year and the free
version of AVG. As I began to explore them, I believe they do the same
thing: provide anti-virus protection and anti spyware.

    I saw this on this usenet group;

    ***
There are those that have mixed/matched two AV products by tweaking them.
However, it is NOT a suggested method and such an act has not been
proven to provide extra protection, only resource loss.
    ***

My question: Should I indeed be running only one of these applications
and, if so, which one would folks recommend???

    Many thanks,
    Carl

Seeing as the regulars must be off celebrating an early Xmas Eve, I will
add a few words from my perspective. My daughter has a Mac Book laptop
with NO Windows on it, but see below for my thoughts.

Not so.....Zone Alarm is a firewall and there already is an XP firewall
on your machine by default, btw. At least, there is on mine which is
not a combo of Mac and Windows.

AVG is an antivirus, assuming that is all you downloaded. These are
apples and oranges and run quite well together. ZA will keep trojans
out and AVG will stop viruses and some malware perhaps.

You could add the free older version of AdAware or Spybot, but if you
are not hitting the porn or crack sites, you should be quite safe with
what you have on there. (G)

The below question and comment is in regard to using TWO background
antivirus programs at the same time. That is NOT what you have on your
computer. That would be like using Norton and McAfee at the same time
(which is a horrifying thought, grin). They are both bloatware.

Anyway, when the *big boys* come back, they can advise you further, but
    I think I covered it.

    Cheers....Heather
(and I use the free Avast antivirus, not AVG....but there isn't really a
big difference. I also have ZA Pro on here, but disabled it. The XP
firewall is all I need for what I do.)

LOL......I honestly wouldn't know. I'm just a little old lady and
would get the vapours if I hit a porn site. ROFL!!

Run one and only one AV. Running two in background leads to conflict.
Use any good firewall. Windows XP firewall works inbound only. In the
event of a trojan calling out you'd be blind to it.

Which is what I basically said, James. He thinks Zone Alarm is also an
    AV proggie.

And yes, Windows XP firewall doesn't alert you to things *calling home*,
but I found the ZAPro to be a PITA......would rather have an older
version of it. Which I do have, so might just open up a Version 5.5 or
    some such.

    Merry Christmas......Heather

And it just might be depending on what has been installed
