IE Page - Irregular goings on

Currently experiencing lots of problems with my home page and keep wondering what might be the cause. Could it be hijacking problem?

The message I keep getting is as follows :
A change has been detected in your Internet Explorer. The new page is ??????? . If OK, press yes or enter. Click no and we will restore your page.
Even though I click no, the message continuously reappears at some stage.

What do you advise me to do or submit in order for you to do a check or whatever is required.

    Thanks

    Please go to this link
Follow ALL the steps given, and in the order given and please, if any of the scans or programs offer to fix items found then please do. Save any logs. Once you have completed all the steps given then run a scan with HiJackThis and save the log as a text file. Post back here with the HJT log and any others you have saved.

    Hi

Will endeavour to carry out your instructions. Hopefully will be able to get back to you within a couple of days due to circumstances beyond my control.

IE Page - Irrregular Goings ON

    Hi 1964

Finally able to respond. Carried out instructions to best of my ability and apart from Ad-Aware all were completed.
Ad-Aware kept freezing during scan process at the same point everytime I attempted to run. I even uninstalled/reinstalled but to no avail. In actual fact I am in possession of Se-Plus. H/ever I uninstalled it and then installed SE Personal only to find the same situation (freezing up). The only way I could end the process was by using Windows Task Manager where it informed that the prog was not responding. Because I don't really know what it might have come up with.
I have written to Lavasoft asking for help but no response currently forthcoming.

Malicious Software Removal Tool was run - nothing to report
The result of Online scans were as follows

Panda Active came up with the following

    quote

    Incident Status Location

    Spyware:Cookie/Com.com Not disinfected
    C:\Documents and Settings\Knox.PRIVATE-7FB4CFF\Cookies\knox@com[2].txt

    unquote

    BitDefender - nothing found

Just for good measure I also did a Symentec Security Check and upon completion it showed three(3) items as green. The other which was AntiVirus
Product Check it appeared in red. Upon examination it said something about

    Analysis:
WARNING! No known virus protection software found. This means your computer and data are vulnerable to virus attacks. Virus attacks can have serious consequences, including system damage and data loss.

Don't really understand as I do have AVG 7.5 Spyware installed and that found nothing

Now down to the nitty gritty - HJT

    Copy of HJT

Can you tell me, were the scans, not the online of course but AdAwareSE and other installed scanners run in SAFE MODE?
Also what IS your Home Page?
    Is it THIS;
    http://www.msn.com/

OR is it what is shown in my attachment?

IE Page - Irrregular Goings ON

    Hi

I am almost certain that they were carried out in Safe Mode but the fact you have asked has created some doubt in my mind. If you wish I could repeat them during the course of the weekend when time permits.
Regarding the home page, it is the one shown in image file. Sometimes I use Mozilla Firefox Browser and the home page there is aol.com
Regarding Ad-Aware I decided to download the SE Personal once again and try another scan. This time it worked and what appears to have been happening is that upon reaching a certain point in scanning it took so long to continue that even though it showed up as not responding in the Windows Task Manager it eventually continued thereafter. It came up clean. It was done in the normal as opposed to Safe mode so perhaps I should do a scan in the same mode along with the others which some doubt exists in my mind.
I must remark that since I started this thread, the constant happenings which I originally posted have for the past two days not occurred.

Awaiting yr response as to whether I should rpt the required procedures under para 8 of request for assistance

    Tks

    Hi Xonk,

I do not see much there - (apart from some minor cleanup that Judy may suggest).

The message I keep getting is as follows :
A change has been detected in your Internet Explorer. The new page is ??????? . If OK, press yes or enter. Click no and we will restore your page.
Even though I click no, the message continuously reappears at some stage.
This is very likely a result of installing IE7 and its components.
-- If you open IE to your desired homepage and set it as such via web settings, do you still have issues?

I agree with PP. The log really looks clean and I would suggest following is recommendation about resetting the home page you want via web setting and see if it works.
There are some items showing in your HJT log I would recommend cleaning up to speed up the computer a bit because you do have some things running in the background and running at start with can be run very easily manually.
As for you problem with the AdAwareSE, I too have had that same problem. Why it happens I don't know but it does appear that it is not working but have also found if you wait a bit it will finally continue on it's merry way.

Here are entries from your HJT log which can be fixed. They are not bad, but really not necessary. To fix them using HJT run the program again, place a checkmark next to them all. Once you have the checkmarks in place then click the FIX button. Exit HJT.

The first ones below are all listed in O4 section of the scan and note programs which are set to Start when the computer starts. Now these suggestions are all "users choice" meaning you can ignore them or stop them from auto starting. They all can be run manually and are not necessary for the smooth running of the computer.
You can either go to the Options of each program and disable auto-start from there or use a program like Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel to disable their auto starts. It is a free program and very easy to use.
Cmaudio>>>Available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel
NvCplDaemon>>>System Tray icon used to change display settings, change the clock rate and memory speed for nVidia based graphics cards. This is unnecessary since you can easily configure these settings the way you want them in the Display Properties and not have to mess with them again. Also disable the "NVIDIA Driver Helper Service" if enabled as it can cause this entry to be re-enabled on re-boot (note that this service can also cause extreme shutdown delays if enabled)
WinPatrol>>>according to WinPatrol info this program will "Manage Startup programs, tasks, cookies; will sniff out Worms, Trojan horses, Cookies, Adware, Spyware, Klez, Assumption and other malicious programs"
This is up to you but personally I think it is a bit much. Most of this can be managed by your browser settings, your use of a good virus program and especially by SpywareBlaster.
Windows Defender>>>a good program, but I found it slowed my computer.
SBAutoUpdate>>>SpywareBlaster auto-update. Personally I recommend manual updates each week rather than the auto update setting on anything except the anti-virus progam.
PC Pitstop Optimize Scheduler>>>I usually never recommend the use of these automatic optimizer programs. I just feel it is safer to do optimization manually. Then a user knows for sure the adjustments made.

These entries with no file or file missing should be fixed

    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

These entries all have to do with your "check up" of the computer and can be removed.
If you need them again they can easily be downloaded again.

    Hi All

To best of my ability removed what you suggested but there might be some items still hanging about which you will probably notify me.
Since last contacting you I had to reinstall a new version of AOL 9.0 and currently using aol 9.0 Se, so I am pretty sure there should be changes in my log. Here is copy of my latest HJT LOG

    Awaiting your findings

I have just discovered that in Windows Task Manager AOLACSD.EXE is utilizing what appears to be 50% of my CPU. Perhaps you can direct me to a correct forum thread where I can discover how to resolve this problem. Bcs of this I am having a constant background hum.

    Thks
