Vista freezes on login

Hi Guys, I had a lot of luck here fixing my wife's laptop very recently. You guys rock. A friend's new HP laptop is freezing at the login. I managed to make it to the desktop once and ran HJT.

HP Pavilion, AMT Turion with 1gb memory, running Windows Vista. Here's the HJT log. I ran it through the online analyzer here and there were a few red spots. I didn't want to do anything without asking here first.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

You said you used the Analyzer here...Don't. It has not been updated in nearly a year. If you look closely at the items noted in red, one of them is

Obviously this is not bad, it is the program you are running. The others noted are normal parts of Windows Vista...
SideBar and WindowsWelcomeCenter...none of those are required to run but they are, by default, set to do so. These can be disabled along with many of the others noted.

But I will tell you what I find very unusual in this log...there are a HUGE number of items set to auto-start when Windows starts showing both in the O4 section and in the O23 Services section and virtually NONE of these programs were running in the background when this scan was run. I don't believe I have ever seen this before UNLESS the scan was run in Safe Mode but the log shows Normal Mode. Did you stop things running before doing the scan?
A KEY program NOT running but according to Services should be running is Norton Anti-virus program if the computer was booted to Normal mode. If booted to Safe Mode then the anti-virus program wouldn't be running.

Now you say this is a NEW laptop, how new? The owner obviously has installed Yahoo so he has done some surfing. But if the computer IS new he could contact the manufacturer because there should be a warranty in place, unless it is not as new as you think.

Have you tried booting to Safe Mode? Try that and see if the computer freezes or not.

Using the F8 Method

1. Restart your computer.
2. When the computer starts you will see your computer's hardware being listed. When you see this information start to gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the Windows Vista Advanced Boot Options.
3. Select the Safe Mode option using the arrow keys.
4. Then press the enter key on your keyboard to boot into Vista Safe Mode.
5. When Windows starts you will be at a typical logon screen. Logon to your computer and Vista will enter Safe mode.
