    Excel's Row limitation

I can't seem to find a definitive answer to this question. Excel (at least <2007) has it's row limitation of 65536 rows, but why?

The little tiny bit of info I found seems to relate to the fact that the code is based on a 16-bit code and not 32 or higher.

Can anyone else shed some light?

A bit outdated thread but just noticed it, anyhow, the info you found made sense and would very likely to be the cause of the limitation. As soon as I read the number I thought of the 16-bit system.

It is not possible for Microsoft Excel to go beyond 65,536 rows in asingle worksheet (also known as a sheet or a spreadsheet). If yourequire more than 65,536 rows, you will have to split the informationacross multiple worksheets. There is also a limitation on the number of columns and characters ina single cell per worksheet. At most 256 columns and 32,000 charactersin a single cell can be used per worksheet. Again, to get beyond thislimit in Microsoft Excel, one will have to open a new worksheet. As pdreyn-ga points out in the Comments below, if you require usingthat much data, you may want to look into database alternatives, suchas Microsoft Access.

That's what I figured. Thanks TL!

I did take a gander at Excel 2007 and it doesn't have this limitation. It can render over 1,000,000 rows and 16,000 columns...

I figured Uncle Bill would come up with a more powerful, sup'ed up version in 2007 for all his spoiled li'l brats who want more than what they really need.

Well, the only reason I ever need more than that, is to export an SQL query from oracle, or to open some of our reports that we have....but I don't really see the need for that many rows....

    Hi Gizmo

I think you can go with a sheet 2 logic instead of compelling to the end of the rows available along.. But any how it was nice to know the fact abt that 16 bit concept.. havent thought abt that in any ways...

    Thanks Guys
