I switched from Intel to AMD back in the 166mmx days, but have recently been "trying" core2's.. I can't say that I have any preference between the two, my current concern is performance in photo / 3d rendering and databus throughput.

.. They all have their little quarks.. A side note, my amd 939 3400+ is alot slower than an e6600, and my 2500+ at 3200+ settings is a bit slower than the A64... and this might sound wrong to you but, I haven't had the "WOW! that's fast" reaction that I experienced with an overclocked athlon 700mhz and voodoo3 3000 videocard playing UT and quake with PS2-rate clocked up on the mouse port..... tried OC my data bus, HT, multiplier, FSB etc... even set the usb port to 1000mhz just to see if that did anything.... I got close, but none of those games run worth a dam at lower settings, and the higher settings all have some little "ISSUE" that stops them from being "liquid" Once I get the cobwebs worked out in the bios/drivers and 3d settings? wtf is with all these 3d settings, where's the EXE patches for videogames.... nvidia quake? rendition quake.... you know what I'm talking about.... Verrite, voodoo, 3dfx.... when a patch was all you needed on the videogame exe to make the graphics all smooth..... ever try moto-racer on a 3dfx or verite 2200 system.... or monstertruck madness..

if you want a good rig for less cash go with a nicely built AMD, want a true screamer build a high end Intel box, i personally have always had an AMD machine and plan to keep it that way, not to say i dont use some Intel here, i have a P4 HTPC and a P4 Dell Optiplex but they were free/cheap and do the job well

I agree with Precidia. My Macbook is core 2 duo, but my desktop/gaming rig is an Opteron 165 dual-core.
