    Is SpybotS&D a virus?

Well, I downloaded it and ran it on my XP machine. Hours passed with
continuous disk activity. Then PC-Cillin reported 26600 suspicious changes.
I let it continue. Eventually it had cearly crashed - no resonse to
    CTRL-ALT-DEL.

Restarted by switching machine off. Uninstalled the thing in a big hurry.
Now my machine is 'crippled', by which I mean that everything takes several
times as long as it did before - even opening folders. In other
    circumstances I'd suspect a virus, wouldn't I. But PC-Cillin reports no
    problems.

What version? No idea, I've scrubbed it off may valuable machine.

    HELP ........ :-(

Not if you got it from their own site.
    (FOR FREE)

However if you just download a file by the same name off some hacker/crackz
    FTP or P2P server,...welllll

Not the appropriate group for asking this sort of question? :-)
Of course I downloaded it from their own site - I may lack some knowledge
but I am not entirely stupid.

    Thanks a bundle, anyway

I have installed Spybot S+D on many systems with no issues-ever.
Why don't you just restore your image backup you made? Oh you don't
make backups? Well now is a good time to start. Get all your
documents together and burn to disk. Next, gather all pics and burn to
disk. Now copy your favorites folder to your USB drive. Find all your
install media. Have you put all your passwords in a safe place? Good,
go dig it out. You should be ready to format now. Go through the
nearest drive-thru and get your favorite snacks and drinks. If you
are a smoker, better get a backup pack (you may need it). After you
have installed windows and all your other programs get yourself a
image program. I have heard good things about Seagate's tool (free).
