    blocking spam?

    g'day friends,

i use a web hosting service and the e/mail account i have using that
address get heaps of spam mail daily, the host offers an anti-spam
service but for me just can't afford it.

is there anyway i can effectively block this sort of mail before it
    downloads to my inbox?

i use forte agent as my mail reader and i killfilter all these e/mails
as i delete them but the problem isn't getting any less.

    tia

What software is the host using? cPanel? If so, check to see if
SpamAssassin is available. It catches almost all spam for my accounts.

Also blackhole everything not sent to your exact address. Disable the
    "catchall" address.

Some hosting providers provide an automatic bounce message back to the
sender for suspected spam. The suspected email is placed in a "SPAM"
mailbox on the hosting server until the original sender manually clicks on
the "Authorize" (read real person) link in the bounce message. At least my
hosting provider does and it works great. You might want to think about
    changing providers.

Fitz, are you referring to a Challenge/Response system? It tells the
sender s/he has to click on a link?

Do you realize that a very high percentage of spam uses a forged FROM:
field, usually using the email address of someone from the spammer's
list? You are further annoying the other victims by doing that.

I hope this is not what you meant.

Yes I do mean the challenge/response system. I realize that a lot of email
has fake headers or forged "from" info. Within days of opening a new
website and using a form for a new email address, I began getting spam for
the one email address that was on the site. I instituted formmail and email
sent through formmail reaches me fine but spam bots using my email get the
    challenge/response. I instituted the challenge/response within 48 hours and
haven't received spam since then. Also I noticed that in the spam mail I
had been receiving, the "from" fields were usually blank or had garbage
    addresses such as @uiiimhivydto.com

If people would realize thy could use an invalid email address to sign up
for a lot of websites (or a "throe-away" email address), practice "safe
hex", not post email addresses on websites or newsgroups the volume of spam
would be cut way back. Not 100% effective by any means but it is a decent
start. I never post a good email address and usually sign up for websites
using a hotmail address (which I never check). If other folks are getting
challenge/response email because their email address is on a spammer's list,
then I'm sorry but I don't want the spam either.
