    weird AGP slot

Has anyone ever seen a slot like this before? I drew the card with pins alined with the slot, if I was to put it in, thats how it aligns.

Anyone see a slot like this before, and is it safe to put the card in it? The last part of the card is just a plastic holder, no actual curcuitry - every other AGP has a clip there, this one does not.

I'm guessing its probably not safe to put the card in there. So this card will have to go back in the server and I'll have to use the PCI one instead. This PC is for someone else so figured I'd give them a higher end card since this thing is overkill for a server.

It is most likely an AGP pro slot, there are two versions of agp-pro, the differences are related to the total power available to the the agp card, and different voltage "keys". The voltage keys are little cuts in the video card that line up with posts in the agp slot. Check out the wiki regarding the different AGP slots; scroll down to the "compatibility" section and have a look at the diagram, it shows the different variations of AGP slots, with discriptions of what they are.

Yeah thats what it was, plugged it in and it worked. Got worried I'd have to go swap with the server again. Guess if it fits, it works, normally.

Been reading up on it, looks interesting; noticed the thing about it being tailored towards power hungry OpenGL, CAD/CNC workstation class graphics cards.

Usually if it's a "universal" agp pro, it's backwards compatible with 1/2/4/8x non pro AGP cards.. But there are some exceptions with certain agp cards not being compatible with the voltage key's of the non Universal AGP pro sockets.

This reminds me of a horrible compaq experience I had with a friend's machine. The motherboard had this purple AGP slot, I just could not get the video card to work. I ended up quitting and just bringing the machine to Staples where they bought it.

Turns out, on compaqs, if the slot is purple, it means the motherboard does not support AGP. Just cheaper to make the board go through the same set of factory processes or something, I suppose.
