    Internet running slow

These last couple weeks my internet has been running a lot slower than it should. I am on cable with Road Runner. In both mozilla firefox and internet explorer. I already ran a scan with AVG and nothing was detected so I was wondering what could the problem be for it running slow? Thank you very much.

We need a LOT more info than this...tell us the specs of the computer. Have you added any new software, hardware? What anti-virus program and firewall do you use? Have you cleaned out all your temp files? Have you run a defrag lately? Did you complete ALL the steps here?
I already ran a scan with AVG
    Which AVG program...anti-virus, anti-spy, or anti-rootkit?

I recommend contacting your ISP and asking them if there are any outages or signal issues in your area... I'm not your ISP's tech support, but there's a page on your cable modem 192.168.100.1? or 192.168.1.1? it will list your modem status, and signal quality; you want to see snr of 36DB downstream power between -15 and +15; I like to see it right between -1 and +6 and upstream power around 38-42, any upstream power levels above 42 and poor signal to noise like 20-25 signal to noise you're looking at a line signal issue or a provisioning issue and need your ISP's help..

What Cauz was saying (in non-geek, plain English):

    1. Open your browser
    2. Try typing one of the IP addresses he mentioned which hopefully will open your modem's diagnostic screen.
    3. Check the values for the settings he mentioned to see if everything looks OK in that section cause if there is a problem with any of the settings, there is not much you can do but to contact your ISP!

    4. If they look fine or fine-ish then proceed with what Jholland suggested.

    * DSL speeds are affected by the network’s location. The further from the central office of the telephone company you are, the slower your high speed Internet connection will be.
    * Some modems, particularly inexpensive models and internal modems, can only handle certain speeds of data transfer, limiting the speed of the Internet connection, regardless of the speed your high speed service can provide.
    * Cable Internet services share bandwidth with satellite Internet access. If there are many subscribers using that same bandwidth, it can slow down the connection.
    * Some older homes that use outdated telephone wires may be the cause of a slow Internet connection, as they can sometimes be limited to a 33.6 Kbps speed.
    * If a Web site has particularly high traffic at the time you are trying to access it, your slow connection speed could be the fault of the Web site. If too many people are trying to access the same site at the same time, it could cause congestion and slow down the entire site.
