I have exactly the same problem. Yesterday I found a worm on my PC, the one that makes the taskbar and start menu and everything else disappear from my desktop. Apparently it is called Trojan.ByteVerify , according to my Norton Antivirus Software.

Well, I thought I had removed it by following the instructions on Symantec's website, and it worked fine for a while ( a few hourse) and then........

...then funny things started happening. Here are three very strange symptoms that I have noticed:

    1. Every time Windows is started (or restarted), the folder C:\Windows\system32 opens

    2. Everything, and I mean every single action (opening folders, clicking buttons) is very VERY slow

    3. Internet Explorer has stopped working altogether (shows page not found) even though my internet is connected fine. (I know coz I am writing this post from my PC using Netscape Navigator).

This pretty much tells you that a 'startup' entry (file that was possibly related to the removed malware) is no longer on your system. The location of this file, possibly an executable was in \Windows\System32 folder. Windows can't find the file so it opens the last folder it sees in the path. Using startup manager type program, look for this invalid entry and delete it, my recommended programs are Autoruns, RunScanner and StartupControlPanel. Since this invalid entry could reside in an area other than the most typical startup locations, StartupControlPanel may not be suitable. Due to its depth, I'd recommend the free tool RunScanner that I have been using/testing for a while now.

    2. Everything, and I mean every single action (opening folders, clicking buttons) is very VERY slow.

This is generally due two possibilities: The so called clean system is really not that clean just yet or either the malware or the disinfection process damaged system (registry too) and Internet Explorer related files. This goes for #3 on your list as well! IF you can install Mozilla Firefox and it works fine, then it is your system and IE that was damaged. If Firefox can't open any pages either than either the malware still present or your system files and also WinSock settings in the registry could be damaged.
