I still lack in understanding why you want to block Akamai....
It may not be possible to fully block them anyways.
Create a HOSTS Editor and scan it for all Akamai entries.

I am not visiting akamai website or any website related with
akamai.net.
Then why is it that site yahoo goes to akamai.net Since blocking
this sites, it now takes hours to visit sites.

Assuming Windows XP - Disable your DNS Client, as a large HOSTS file
will slow down your machine, especially (due respect) if you mess with it.

You are not understanding how a HOSTS file entry works. You do *not*
enter 207.61.0.0 or anything other than 127.0.0.1 and the domain name
(for ad and nefarious site blocking). Use this only:

127.0.0.1 a248.e.akamai.net

With this above line in your HOSTS file, the browser will not attempt to
go to *any* IP address that this akamai server might use. You do not
need to care what its actual IP address is.

Here, have a look at a copy of my own personal HOSTS file. Feel free to
copy it if you wish. Copy the entire file and save it as just: hosts
without the .txt extension.

http://k75s.home.att.net/hosts.txt

You are using Windows XP ? Place the file in:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

...which will go away if you make proper entries in the HOSTS file.

Boy this is serious.
I have updated my host file and it worked for one day.
Today, anything with yahoo.com,is blocked and it shows
akamai.net !!!!!!!!
Though I know it has nothing to do with host file and have checked all
sites in host file has no connection with yahoo.
It is like hours and making one frustrated for just getting 5 minutes
work done. I am thinking of calling my ISP provider
and telling him to activate his firewall now. This is really
frustrating.

I have cleared cookies and started without addon on IE 7. still the
same.
You just have to wait and than it comes "page cannot be displayed".
Even tried https://www.yahoo.com still the same.
Secondly, when I sign in from mail.yahoo.com it takes you to
my.yahoo.com !!!!

This is really making me upset and frustrated.

That should be:
http://www.yahoo.com
and not using "https". (Though both work for me.)

Unless you have loaded the very long MVPS host file, it may be time for
you to paste in a reply here the exact contents of your hosts file. Or,
put it on a web server somewhere, using the name "hosts.txt" ...

Tried uploading the hosts file by reply, it does not allow to upload
more than 16000 bytes / character.
I have downloaded file from mvps.org, than added your host file too

Let's back up. The mvps file is huge. Start small.

Wildcards are not permitted in a HOSTS file. Those asterisks need to be
removed, and replaced with the exact full domain name.

The "- just added recently .." Is that in the file? Comments in a
hosts file must begin with a #

I have observed that on downloading msn messenger, found below host
name appear on downloading the software. There has been no visit made
to the website of akamai and still getting below url on downloading
the messenger software.

Is that the entire line for the "login.yahoo.akadns.net" ?
Where is the 127.0.0.1 in front of it? And why would you want to block
your login to yahoo?

Besides serving ads, akamai also can be used to download software, when
commissioned by companies for that service.

Actually, I still am not sure what your real problem is, or even if
there is one! <g>
