a248.e.akamai.net / a943.g.akamai.net ? how to block it is dyanmic

    Hi all,

I have been observing there are lots of sites that are sending packets
    in or out whenever
accessing any website even though not visiting their sites. Want to
    block below such sites

    1) a248.e.akamai.net
    2) a943.g.akamai.net
    3) 127.o.net
    4) xeex.net

I do not visit this sites but this sites are sending packet or going
to their sites first and than sends to the sites where you want to
go. Tried to block using zone and this sites have dynamic IP Address.
This has now started annoying and consumes time for me to access
    other web site.

How to block such dynamic IP address websites ?

    Cap

Use your HOSTS file. Make your own, or get one already filled with ad
    servers and malicious sites.

I am not sure what the original poster (OP) meant by dynamic. If he
means that the exact IP address changes frequently, then the hosts file
approach is not practical. This is why I do not use the hosts file
    approach.

If the OP needs to block every host in the domain o.net (for example)
he would have to somehow find every such host, and enter that particular
host into his hosts file. If by "dynamic" the OP means that new hosts
are added to o.new all the time, then this is not practical.

I can see that someone's understanding of the hosts file is not the same as
    mine. Maybe I'm just wrong.

I think the OP just didn't know how to describe his situation. I have
several akamai servers in my hosts file. His use of 'dynamic' might mean
there are so many of them, it _seems_ dynamic.

    Beauregard,

Dynamic, means the below host sites are updating IP address after
every seconds or moment you refresh the site you visit.
Best part it does not allow access to yahoo, if the below site is
    blocked.

    1) a248.e.akamai.net
    2) a943.g.akamai.net
    3) 127.o.net

Quite possible. They have many servers sharing the advertising load. But
I think you will find that the domain name used does not change very
    often.

I added your domain names to my hosts file (I keep them alphabetical):

    127.0.0.1 127.o.net
    127.0.0.1 2o7.net
    127.0.0.1 a.tribalfusion.com
    127.0.0.1 a248.e.akamai.net
    127.0.0.1 a88.g.akamai.net
    127.0.0.1 a9.g.akamai.net
    127.0.0.1 a943.g.akamai.net

...and Yahoo.com still works. Some ads do not display.

Do you know how a HOSTS file works?

I find most ads on the websites i visit are blocked by my use of the
MVPS Hosts file. Using Firefox with the AdBlock and NoScript extensions
installed and a good hosts file makes almost all ads non-existant on my
    screen.

Akamai *is* a legitimate web provider - the other three are highly questionable.
Use a HOSTS file to block the nasty ones <g>

    Hi Sijl,

When I add entry as 127.0.0.1 a248.e.akamai.net in host entry it
only blocks for that ip address, what happens is a248.e.akamai.net has
    different
IP address starting from 207.61.0.0 and it keeps changing, I have
    then blocked from
    207.61.0.0 / 255.255.255.255.
