What is the best dependable, no-nonsense anti-spyware program?

I do use Spybot, but I think I would like something with more frequent
updates. What is considered the best all around anti-spyware program?
Cost is not the deciding factor as to whether I'll buy it or not.

IMO, Webroot Spy Sweeper. Been using it for over 2 yrs and couldn't
    be happier.

Always seems to get the best reviews, that and Spyware Doctor.

There is no single "best" anti-spyware program!
    Maybe, you could read this:
    http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

And "Must have free downloads" can be found here:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=20
    - Check my computer for Malware
    - Protect my computer from Malware
    - and some more .......

O yes, I also use SuperAntiSpyware.
    :-D

    ===============================/:
The industry leader is Webroot Spysweeper which does about the best.
The other two rivals (these are all rated top three) are Trend Micro
    Antispyware and CounterSpy.

Another doing very well is PC Tools SpyDoctor. These top products all
have shields - real time protection that is necessary and combined
with real time antivirus and a firewall for the top protection the
average consumer can purchase and use.

Spyware is like a virus or worm in that you would want to stop dead in
its tracks before it does damages. With spyware - you want that
stopped before it spies and transmits. This is why the real time
protection software programs are expounded on as opposed to using free
programs that do not offer real time protection - scanning after
infections to remove them and after the damage is done - either to the
    computer system or personal informations.

Bottom line - ask around about Webroot Spysweeper.... I have been
using it for years and Trend Micro Antispyware (both catch the most).

You can set it to automatically check for updates hourly or daily.
I have mine set to daily and it downloads new updates almost everyday.

I have no idea. I downloaded mine 2 yrs ago from Webroot and it was
the latest version. Just about 6 months ago I was offered a free
upgrade from Webroot and downloaded it.

I was just looking at the "Detection and Deletion Capabilities"
section in the above link, and they are wrong about at least 2
products, Pest Patrol and Ad-Aware when it comes to removing toolbars,
    at least one called "HotBar".

A friend of mine had a HotBar toolbar downloaded onto her computer,
and it was changing one of her email settings "send pictures with
    messages".

I couldn't remove the damn thing because it wasn't even in the add/
remove programs, so I ran Pest Patrol (comes free with Road Runner) it
detected it, but would NOT remove it.

So then I downloaded Ad-aware (trial) and had the same results.

Then I installed Spy Sweeper, it detected it, quarantined it, and then
said I had to reboot to remove HotBar.

So when I rebooted the first screen that came up was a LOT of files
scrolling down the screen and I was thinking "I hope Spy Sweeper knows
what it's doing or I'm gonna be in deep **** when this computer
finally starts!", when it was finished, it started as normal and
    HotBar was GONE!

Her mail with was back to normal and everything else was working
    perfectly.

That was proof enough to me that Spy Speeper is a top quality tool and
I plan to stick with it.

First line of defense is a router with a built-in firewall.
Use a secure browser such as Firefox/w NoScript, AdBlock, and a Cookie
Manager installed. Use a good AV solution like NOD32. How about a secure
e-mail client? Thunderbird is a good choice. I use this combo and have
not had a problem for years.
