I send this updated list of popular freeware programs around
periodically, to friends via email, and to appropriate news groups, in
case any of the experts see a link that is bad or out of date, or can
suggest an additional freeware link, or two, that would be worth adding
to this decidedly short list. Popular freeware only, please.

I use all of these programs, except for "avast," since experts warn
that you should only have one AV program installed and running at a
time. I also recommend the "newzbot.com" link for free usenet servers.
Some news readers, like 40tude "Dialog," allow you to use more than one
server at a time, so you'll never have to miss another post again,
provided it got through in the first place:

I use it and have been quite happy. I find retention is
longer on ngs that get fewer postings but on very active
ones, it is about two months.

My only complaint is that they don't host the IBM newgroups
    - something about them not actually being in the public
domain - it's on the up and up but apparently is ignored by
other news servers. So when I want to check out IBM, I use
my pathetic newsreader from Time Warner Cable.

If you're having problems, perhaps you could be more
specific and we could check to see if I find the same
issues. I am using Thunderbird as my newsreader.

I use Individual.Net as well and I have been pretty happy with them since
starting with their service a couple of weeks back. It is certainly
economical and I don't need long retention on text ... a couple of months is
fine. Google Groups can take care of the deep search.

    <deleted>

    I use http://www.newzbot.com/ with http://www.40tude.com/dialog/, in
conjunction with http://www.nfilter.org/. Works great, and it's free!

I like it because it's free, and you can filter down messages from multiple
servers for each group you subscribe to, ensuring that you never miss a
message, except for what you block <spam> on your end.
