    Spybot Freezes on: Ad Moke"

    Hi, Guys!

Hoping someone can explain a few things to me in re Spybot:

    1) I've got it set to auto-scan on "Start-Up" but it takes 45 minutes
    to scan---is this normal?!

    2) Lately, out of 73083 processes (?) to be scanned, my system freezes
up at 42522 on account of something called "AdMoke" so I never get to
that point, at the end, where I can click the "Fix problems" feature---
I have to turn off the tower via the back button---so, I take it
    problems aren't getting fixed...?

    3) Exactly, how much do I really need Spybot? Somebody else installed
it, someone who was visiting all kinds of dubious sites as well as
downloading alot from Bittorrents sites 24/7---this person no longer
has access to my system but he insisted Spybot was essential,
especially, if my system were directly connected to my ISP (my cable
modem box through Time Warner Cable). He claimed there was no
Firewall, therefore, Spybot was needed more than ever

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated---I've got McAfee running for
viruses and no, no Firewall installed---doesn't Time Warner feature
some kind of built-in Firewall? Should I have one and which do you
    recommend?

    Thanks a million!

    ---Mavarla

Please hold, a post policeman will be along shortly to administer you a
keyboard spanking for some minuscule breach of Usenet etiquette you have
inadvertently commited. In the mean time, I suggest you go here
<http://www.williamgaddis.org/jr/jrmusic/index.shtml> where you will find an
exquisite selection of soothing classical musical clips, including such
popular treasures as William Percy French's "Phil the Fluter's Ball" and
    Tchaikowski's "1812 Overture".

No, they (RoadRunner) do not have a built-in firewall for your computer.

    > Should I have one and which do you recommend?

    Yes.

For your Windows box, I prefer Sunbelt Kerio. The trial version becomes
the free version after 30 days:
    http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Home...onal-Firewall/

Even better, especially for broadband users, is the use of a router
between your computer and your cable modem.

    Dear Beau,

Thank you very much for the Sunbelt recommendation (thanks too, to
"Rufus"---for the Gaddis link: Highly underrated, no?).

Beau---I appreciate your input regarding Road Runner and getting a
    router, as well.

In re Spybot: Would you recommend I re-install the program to stop it
from freezing up or is it always going to do this during checks? It
didn't start freezing up like this until about two months ago and I've
been running it for several years now---maybe, my system is getting
    old?

I've exhausted avenues to find answers in re via Spybot's own website.

Again, thank you for your time and consideration.

Why not try that? Maybe you have some corruption on your hard drive ..
or you do have some form of malware that is stuffing it up when trying
    to remove it.

    Try something else, like SuperAntiSpyware.

Yours is newer than my winbox by many years. Mine is a PIII running
Win2K since 1998, and nothing like you describe has ever happened.

Try turning off System Services. It's an aption in a couple of shields. Worked for me.

    Dear Beau and shneor,

I've taken note of all suggestions from you both and will implement
over the next few days...'til then, keep your fingers crossed for me:
I'll post a "post-proscribed program of fixes" towards the end of the
    week on this NG.

A million thanks for your time and consideration.

    Sincerely,

    Mav
