    Problem Event Name: BlueScreen

I'm sure this has probably been discussed before, but can anyone
tell me what would cause this error message in a brand new Windows
Vista (Gateway) desktop computer, and how exactly to get rid of it?

    I can't tell if it's spyware, a virus, or just something I might've
done wrong. We just got connected to the hi-speed Internet, and surfed
the web for only about five minutes, before the blue screen error
    appeared.

    Thnx,
    Kenny

You supplied too little facts. :-(

    _____

    WHAT has been discussed before?

Unless you want guesses, please supply exact information, to include
    EXACT error message
    Other symptoms
The antimalware protection have in use; up-to-date? always active? updated
virus definitions (only a day or two old)? router with NAT?
    type of Internet connection? dial-up?

For any virus that is expected to spread, crashing the system is
counter-productive - like diseases, the long the carrier is active, the more
    successful the infector.

A little more work on your part will likely result in useful suggestions.
'David H. Lipman', who has already replied, will have expert advice, IF he
    has anything to go on.

Thanks for your reply, and also the other two gentlemen who replied
    so promptly.

The problem went from bad to worse, so the Gateway tech said to take
it to our local Best Buy, which we did yesterday. Since it is a
brand new computer, and as of yesterday wouldn't even boot up in safe
mode any more, they thought it is probably some sort of catastrophic
hardware failure, bad hard disk, or maybe a bad mother board.

They promised to fix it, or replace the whole box with a new one, if
necessary. It's my daughter's first computer. She cried when it
stopped working. I felt so bad, so I thought I'd ask around here for
some expert help, before calling Gateway's tech support, and getting
transferred to some third world trainee who speaks broken English.

But Gateway's tech support was surprisingly helpful. Hopefully,
this problem will never crop up again.

    Hi Kenny.

I can understand that desperate feeling.

Its always right to go back to the seller because that's where the buck
legally rests. If if don't work out of the box its there problem.

That said its how you bought it. At the shop? Online? Where.

The Shop is first stop. They got to fix or replace. Online is harder. I
would go for the two week send back clause in that case. If to late to go
that route its the telephone pain line. Best to get a friendly computer geek
to do the call for you. You need a degree to follow some of the advice.

Al else fails take it to a local computer builder store at ask them to check
it at their going rate. Tell them its a claim job first.
