Thread: Low Resource Software Firewall

    Low Resource Software Firewall

    To All:

Perhaps this is a bit off topic, but I mainly use a software firewall to
check for bad guys trying to phone home. My PC is already behind a
    hardware firewall.

I recently replaced my AV which was starting to become bloatware with a
lean and mean AV that I am so far impressed with. When I went to
update, ZoneAlarm, I was amazed at how big the download was. ZoneAlarm
has been moving in the direction of bloatware for a few years now.

Any recommendations on a small and simple BI-DIRECTIONAL software firewall?

Any comments on the Comodo firewall?

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Re: Low Resource Software Firewall

I recently ran across an interesting read on some Firewall Leak tests.
    http://www.matousec.com/projects/win...ts-results.php
Comodo was top of the charts. I was gonna test that one out on a networked
machine to see how it works, but haven't yet. Jetico appeared to have a gay
interface, so give Comodo a try.

May one ask what was replaced by what?

The latest versions of ZAFree includes a 30-day trial version
of ZA Internet Security Suite (?), which causes (partly) the
excessive size of the download, the ZAFree part is less.

If you want a smaller version of ZAFree, pick 5.5.094 of 4.5.594:

I switched from ZA to Comodo about 5 months ago.
After getting used to it, I can see no need to go back to ZA.

    Fred:

    Thanks for the Re.

I agree, the 5.x and 4.x ZA's used less sys resources. So how does
Comodo compare do ZA on using resources?

    Comodo firewall
    memory usage: 12.7MB real + 18.1MB virtual

Just remember that a software firewall that runs on the same host as the
malware can be compromised. Usually good enough protection and control
but not perfect. However, as compared to a firewall appliance, a local
software firewall lets you define application rules which is what you
    said you wanted.

This may even be a better idea you may be interested in - internal
traffic. Have you tried thagt ??? Here's how.... hunt deep for the old
free Sygate Personal Firewall free version (that's all that's left of
it) I believe it was Symantec who purchased it and discontinued
support for the free verion Sygate Free Firewall has a really compact
graph setting panel with detailed information of all processes criss
    crossing through C:\WINDOWS\system32
    Check it out .......

The lightest I have ever used is an old version of Kerio but it has a
security flaw with fragmented packets. You do know that there is
malware that can bypass a software firewall, right?

You couldn't resist bringing up deficiencies in Microsoft's firewall
when the discussing (in this subthread in which you replied) is about
the Comodo firewall? Not one other respondent has mentioned the Windows
    firewall.

Also, provide a link to the article you claim exists. A search at
Microsoft's support knowledgebase does not find a match on "935807".

Is this your normal or default signature? The Usenet de facto standard
is to keep your signature to 4 lines, or less (preferrably less) not
    including the sigdash line.
