If fact, it only takes a good browser properly set up, and a modicum
of knowledge about what you are doing.
Don't use google groups - use a real newsreader and use your ISP's
access to Usenet. Or just pay an extra $5 a month and get a premium
news server.
Use Mozilla with script blocker, cookie manager and adblocker and
you're halfway there.
Create a fictitious profile and use a web-based email account - avoid
giving out your real information. Block cookies and script for
Google, stay away from MS and Google toolbars and browser enhancer's
Get an ISP you can trust
Read up about how to prevent the stuff and then exorcise your system
with adaware and spybot search and destroy. Don't trust other
programs that promise to rid your system of spyware until you've
vetted them. You will probably still need help to get rid of some of
the more insidious malware - but this newsgroup is a good place to
start.
