Is this really neccessary _ I mean everbody that uses Ad-Aware is
like ..."Duh Dude"... I mean even the most new newbie clicks "Update"
    all the time.

Point is why stop here with SpyBot and Ad-Aware updates released -
which by the way everyone also knows that these products will be
updated continually indefinately for years now anyway. So the point,
why not broadcast every single security update for Webroot, Trend
Micro, CounterSpy, and on and on and on and on.

So the point is why does these two "updates alerts" apply to
alt.privacy.spyware as a whole membership? Do you see the point ?

My complaint: This is totally unneccessary and an annoyance to see all
the time and every time they release new defintions. Cut it out ok ?
Or else post the ones everbody else is using also to make sense - but
    not really.

Well it's a free board and I had my free moment.

You are NOT the first one to point this out. There was quite a discussion about this a
    while back.

At least siljaline now points to a Lavasoft URL for Ad-aware updates. Before he used to
    post a http://aumha.net URL. However, I believe siljaline still posts a http://aumha.net
URL for SpyBot S&D updates when he should (if he has to at all) post a SaferNetworking URL.

Yes it is, and, no, new newbie's *don't* click update all the time.
There are a great many who think that because the program is on their
computer that's enough and it doesn't need updating.

The same applies to AV, firewalls, etc. The worst offenders are those
with a relative/friend/associate "who knows *all* about computers" and
in fact knows next to nothing.

It's easy when you know how and why, and it's easy to forget your own
    newbie days.

Well, what else is irratating about this is that these free programs
offer no real time protection and thus the pc is not protected - so to
promote them is promoting an even worst sense of security as you said
by just thinking the program sitting there is protecting them without
    updating it.

You made the point that these free programs have no Automatic Updates
because they are not paid subscriptions. You also made the point that
since they do not have active shields in real time protection without
automatic updates they are offering no protection whatsoever - so why
promote them ? And what is the point about the updates promotions ?
Why promote that they are protection at all and especially Spybot S&D
and Ad-Aware ? Spybot S&D has continually been rated as one of the
worst for the last four years - why promote it as protection to the
newbie ? Ad-Aware has no real time protection unless you purcahse it
to activate it - so why promote it as protection to the newbie when it
    clearly is not ?

This is the other half of these posts - that they are only promoting
things that do nothing in the way of protection, except perhaps after
the fact of infection with Ad-Aware which has a decent rate of
detection of malware. Why promote the false sense of security. You
made this point for me with your reply. Thank you.

Do you use Ad-Aware free as your only protection ? If not, why not ?
