    They have 2.
One for freeware users and one for PAID subscribers.
The paid versions get more attention, and resources.

Of course the FREE versions have less support, but you can still get through
    at non peak times.

Can't blame them at all for giving more attention to those who financially
    support their product(s).

I understand what you are saying and agree with you that paying
customers should be taken care of first. Something else is going on as i
have used the free version for several years and not had this problem. I
get the "error retrieving file" - no matter what time I try. Several
different computers running different OS,s. Trying from Eastern USA. No
    problem getting the updates manually.

I decided to pay as this was one product I had no problems supporting, and
    have no problems with updates.
However I know lots of people who use the free version and they never
    mentioned any problems.

Just off hand, did you update it a few months ago?
They did drop support to older editions, and I think only support V.7.5 now.

There is still a free version, but you did have to update to the new
    version.
Most people got lots of notices to upgrade.

Thank you, I will check this out. I am using the latest version from
    Major Geek which is 6.2.0.238
I had no idea there was a VER.7.5

AMUN is getting his programs crossed. AVG upgraded to ver 7.5. Ad-Aware free
is 1.06r1. I have not had any problem updating on line. You may have a
corrupted file. You should probably download a fresh copy from Lavasoft,
Remove it completely from your system and reinstall. No one I know using are
having any problem. Once in a while for a period after the put a new file
out it will hang at 5% and fail. Waiting a few hours usually solves the
problem as it is just the server is at it's maximum users.

    Akkkk! My bad.
Woody is correct. I was thinking of AVG for the version number.
    (I use that too)

But replacing the program with the most recent version is always best.
And get it from the authors site, as some of the software sites like major
geeks, and download .com, don't always link to the latest versions.
And as Woody says, uninstall the old one first.

Thanks Woody, I have reinstalled several times from the different
sources and never had this problem. Using different machines with
different OS's. This only started happening about 2 weeks ago. I looked
at download.com user reviews (the negative ones) and there were other
people experiencing the same problem. I know what you mean about the
temporary hang - but this is a different problem. What I can't figure
out is why the problem affects some users and not others. I think I will
reload the program once a week or so and see if it goes away.

Gary, this is a known problem with Earthlink's DNS servers and
Lavasoft... See here for many, many problems like yours:

Thank you very much jen! I could not figure out why some were getting
the problem and others were not. All is sorted out now thanks to you.
