Thread: Why so many definitions updates?

    Why so many definitions updates?

AVG must issue ten or so updates per week. Why are there so many? Is
it because of new malware being written for Vista?

What sort of warped mind would want to create malware? That's not a
real question, just a mild rant. I don't really expect an answer.

I don't think Vista is that big of a target *yet*. Someone recently
posted an article to this group with the following quote, which pretty
much sums up the reason you are seeing so many updates.

"F-Secure highlighted the deluge of nefarious software claiming it can
receive over 40,000 tainted file submissions some days. "How can we
deal with this avalanche," said F-Secure chief research officer Mikko
    Hypponen."

For the most part it's criminals seeking to make a profit by stealing
the use of your pc and its internet connection. Spammers, phisher,
corporate espionage, etc... Where there's easy money to be made,
albeit illegally, there will always be people willing to go after it.

The more updates the better, they say Kaspersky one of the highest rated
anti virus sometimes has more then one update a day.
