Read the section:
"Protection of Certain Personally-Identifying Information"
at http://www.opendns.com/privacy/ first and make sure you
completely understand what it implies.

Apples and oranges. Treewalk runs as a Win32 service with DNS caching on
the user's computer. OpenDNS is simply a replacement for an ISP's, in
most cases outdated, DNS service.
When I switched to broadband (Embarq), I switched to OpenDNS.

The only knock that I have seen about OpenDNS is the ads served up when
a DN cannot be resolved. AFAICT, everything is above board, and the ads
are no worse than using Google.com. The solution to the ads, of course,
is to learn how to type. [grin]
OpenDNS could not be simpler to configure, or un-configure (Is that a
word? - bg), and I have had no problems in 6 months. I could not see an
advantage of something like Treewalk over OpenDNS by adding another
service to my WinXP box. Check out the differences.

As I am sure you know, Obiwan hangs out in the GRC NGs if you want more
info.
BTW, I am keeping an eye on the OpenDNS anti-phishing efforts. I am not
a big fan of centralized blacklisting (see SiteAdvisor for example).
IIUC, the OpenDNS settings are customizable by setting up a personal
account. I might look into that.

Thanks for the clarification - that's an important
difference and moreso everyday as I find that more and more
programs have to have something resident or they're not
happy :-)
I'm running a little experiment with my portable and open
dns pinging different sites and using open dns on my desktop
and my ISP (rr nyc) on my portable - all the average in ms.
16 vs 26
116 vs 162 (a slow site)
97 vs 133
33 vs 10
The numbers on the left are for NYC RR and on the right are
for Open DNS
I'm switching from Treewalk and I'll see how it goes. I
looked at the personal account and it looked like you have
to install some utility if you don't have a static IP - and
I have cable - no static IP
