Brand-new Hosts file - will nail all the ads, spyware, improve your bandwidth, etc.....

I now have an 11,500-line hosts file.
( Started reviewing my old one and couldn't stop - ended up increasing
it by 10x after about 2 days' work trawling through the Security
    sites)

My bandwidth is no longer being pummelled by advertising and other
crap I don't want to see.

Especially useful to nail that 2% of PCs on your network that use 25%
of your internet bandwidth......stick my Hosts file on them to sort
    them out.......

Here is a tiny snippet: (If you want the whole thing....I can ftp it
to you if you want, or something...I don't imagine 11,500 lines would
    go down too well here....)

Wow, you've got WAY too much time on your hands...

You really a DNS server like (Gasp) Bind or (Double Gasp) MS DNS
Just block the entire domain bpath.com, the parasites constantly
    change the names of servers

Note: For reply, newsgroups header with UNRELATED groups for
    cross-posted message trimmed from:
    canb.general,aus.computers,nz.comp,comp.security.f irewalls,alt.privacy.spyware
    to:
    alt.privacy.spyware
The fact that the OP cannot figure what are related newsgroups for a
cross-posted message makes suspect the quality of his block list.

Hosts files are worthless except maybe for lazy newbies. The MVP hosts
file had something like 72 entries just for DoubleClick back a couple
months ago when I checked it. The ad site can allow a connect to their
    web or other server no matter which hostname you use for their domain;
that is, the hostname is bogus and any hostname will permit a connect.
When you retrieve a web page with a link to the ad site, a server-side
script generates a random string for the hostname. Your hosts file
would be ridiculously huge to cover all possible permutations of a
hostname. The hosts file requires a a fully qualified host
(hostname.domain.tld[.cctld]). You can't wildcard nor can you specify
just domains. You are also delegating the responsibility of filtering
hosts to someone else that composed the huge hosts file because rare few
users will bother to review the entire list.

Too many times I hear users ***** about not being to display a site
after they started using a hosts file (composed by someone else). The
site can see whether or not you yanked their images. You download their
page, you block a retrieve of an image, they can see that, so they
refuse to show you the rest of THEIR web page because you refuse to see
all their content. Also, if they use Flash, your choice is to either
see it ALL or see none of it (unless they decide to provide an alternate
non-Flash page). Since Flash will stream the content to you from one
server, you can't block any content delivered within that stream unless
you block the entire stream which then makes you look stupid for going
to that site in the first place if you know you won't see any of it.
It's their web page. If you don't want to see their content, including
the ads, then just don't go there anymore. The site may only exist due
to advertising to pay for the costs of the resources to provide that web
site. You visiting there to consume their resources but blocking the
ads which generates the revenue needed to support that site makes YOU
the abuser, not them. If a site has way too much advertising for my
taste, it really isn't that hard a decision to not go there anymore.
