    What browser do you use?

I'm using Firefox and never see a double click cookie.

The browser is set to keep cookies for the originating site only
(rarely will cause a problem), and all cookies are dumped when I close
    the browser.

Add flashblock, adblock, and noscripts (both manager type extensions
that let you choose what sites can use them) and FF is a bulletproof
    browser.

I imagine that the sites feel it is in their interest to set DC
cookies. They are all doing it, you have to stay ahead of the
    marketeers.

Flash player sets cookies that you have to know about to remove.
Google is now adding a script called "ad sense" on a lot of sites,
Install shield includes a spy that will report your use of a program
back to the authoring site (they have a manager for it too). Flash
player defaults to allow web sites to access a camera and/or
microphone if you have one installed.

    Its a jungle out there

I believe it is the authors of the sites who add the code, authors who
are looking for a few pennies if you click on the ads.

I usually use FF with noscript - but, more frequently than
I would wish, FF can't render a page properly and I open
that page in IE using the add-on IE view lite. Perhaps this
is how double click makes it's way onto my system with such
    regularity.

But I can't stop using IE - what's the next best alternative?

    Thanks.

What doesn't render properly? Can you give an example page?

Maybe so. Though if the doubleclick domain names were in your HOSTS
file, all browsers will use that.

    > But I can't stop using IE -

I haven't used IE for anything other than testing webpages, in years.
    Just Say No.

Firefox and Opera. Or if you want a suite, use SeaMonkey or Opera.

I'd echo beauregard with respect to Opera. Occasionally I see a site
that won't render with FF - basically the spacing of the text will be
wrong and some parts of text will overwrite others. Opera will work.

9 times out of 10 the poorly rendered site is still readable. I
figured AdBlock or not allowing images from outside sites to be
displayed was throwing the layout off. But the problem isn't severe
    enough to warrant troubleshooting.

Most often it is the commercial aggressive marketing sites that cause
problems so it is no great loss to me.

No script requires you to allow sites other than the one of interest
for some things to work. But that isn't a "rendering" problem. Most
often problems occur with on line purchases where the site you visit
has another site handling its credit card processing - or a picture
stored on a different server that will pop up when the link is
    clicked..

    Louise,

    1) I use IE for Microsoft Updates only, locked down the rest of the month.

    2) I use Firefox as my default browser, everything locked down. Always.

    3) I use Opera as my trusted browser, Javascript and cookies enabled
    for trusted sites only.

    4) I use a Mozilla-based suite (I have all 3 installed for evaluation
purposes), locked down, for email and news and the links therein.

    5) I have a couple of other browsers installed, such as K-Meleon, that
I use from time to time for special purposes. I really like the
K-Meleon privacy bar. It makes toggling everything including images a
    piece of cake.

Quite often, I have 3 or more browsers launched at once. No problem at
all. I cannot imagine ever using only one browser again. They are only
browsers, for crying out loud. [g] Don't restrict yourself to using
only one for the rest of your life. One thing is certain. If you fall
in love with one of these browsers, eventually its developers will
break your heart by taking away one of your favorite features. Guaranteed.

BTW, other than Microsoft Updates, I don't use ActiveX for anything.
Popups and iFrames disabled in all browsers. Always. And I got rid of
all of my JRE and Flashcrap plugins. Screw the sites that insist on
any of these abominations on humanity. YMMV.

About your Double Click problem. Have you installed IE-SPYAD?

    http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm

If you block Double Click ads with your HOSTS file, it should not
matter which browser you use. You should not see them. However, the
exception could be when you use IE. Microsoft has put backdoors into
the XP/Vista OSs that get around the HOSTS file, such as DNSAPI.DLL.

    http://www.securityfocus.com/archive.../30/0/threaded

In most cases, using IE-SPYAD and a blocking HOSTS file should be
redundant (nothing wrong with that), but then again, you never know. I
get _no_ Double Click ads. Ever.

Yes - my most frequent problems are with the smaller
purchasing sites. I can't think of one offhand to give as
an example but I know it happens on a too frequent basis (I
do a lot of online ordering).

Is there an add-on for Opera so that I can right click and
show this site in Opera the way I do with IE - in other
words, a right click "view this page in Opera"?

    TIA

I know I should know this....but - how does one add
something like double click to the hosts file?

My thinking is that when I run adaware or Spybot and I see
the same sites come up again and again (for example, double
click and zedo), I could copy those specifically to my hosts
file - if I knew how to add things to the hosts file :-)

    Thanks again.

You simply open the file in a text editor (like Notepad or better), and
    add the domain names. Sample:

    127.0.0.1 ad.au.doubleclick.net
    127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net
    127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.com
    127.0.0.1 ad.uk.doubleclick.com
    127.0.0.1 ad.uk.doubleclick.net

Get a copy of mine if you wish:

    http://k75s.home.att.net/hostsfile.txt <-- the file
