    Question regarding employer laptop

Like many people, I take my employer-issued laptop home with me, and I
connect it to work via VPN or Outlook Server, so there is no
expectation of privacy there since everything going in and out is
    probably logged.

Now, if I switch the laptop to my own home DSL connection, would my
employer still know what I am doing with my laptop?

    Thanks for any insight.

Depends on what spyware, your employery has installed on your laptop.

Think about this, you pickup some malware from your surfing from home
on works laptop and infect work's filesystem or other employee's
systems when you are on work's network.

For all you know, it might have a keylogger, with spyware that
periodically "phones home." And tells your employer what you
have been doing. Regardless of whether you are using their Net
    connection or not.
