Windows firewall won't stay on

I go to ControlPanel->WindowsFirewall and turn it on (as recommended).
If I then reboot the firewall will have reverted to off.

I have ZoneAlarm installed. Could ZA be turning off the Windows
firewall?

Is it a bad idea to have both firewalls on?

Running XP(MCE) on 64-bit Dell.

Not needed. Unless you are visiting dicey sites and then ZA would tell
you if something was phoning home.

I run with just the XP firewall myself. Tested that.....XP + ZAPro and
finally added a router for triple protection. They all tested out the
same on GRC, but the router lowered a port to one less than stealthed.

Basically it is your choice what to run. But so far (18 mos), I have
had no problems. (and wireless routers are a PITA to set up, lol)

I thought so too until Linksys added a utility to their website. It
does everything but name the network all automatically. No mess, no
fuss.

While I'm no fan of the windows firewall, Seems to me that ZA shouldn't
be *ABLE* to turn it off. You should have to use your admin account to
do that manually.

I'd suggest some trials to see what's working in your situation. It is
easily possible (likely in my opinion) that two firewalls could conflict
with each other.

I'm not inclined to trust ZA either, I've seen occasions of *IT* phoning
home even though it was set to NOT do any automatic updates.

My choice is Sygate Personal firewall, version 5.5 build 2525, because
it's got plenty of features and advanced rule based control and it's the
last version before symantec bought 'em out.

Your right about that Roy. The ZA installation has very deep system
hooks. It dumps stuff all over your computer. You need a registry tool
and some reg knowledge to really get it out of your system.
