So father-in-law gets stuck paying $20/month just because son-in-law is
too lazy to call father-in-law on the phone and have father-in-law act
the automatron to follow son-in-law's instructions? And for
once-in-a-blue-moon assistance from son-in-law? GTMP is hardly a
financially sound solution for the OP's original stipulation of
providing occasional help to father-in-law. GTMP is more for users that
want repeat and often remote access to their hosts. Doesn't sound like
what the OP is asking about, and father-in-law ends up footing the bill.

You are aware that you can try GTMP for free for 30 days or so....

Problem is, how can I get through to my work computer? It has an non-
routable (local) IP address, and the IT people already told me I'm not
eligible for their vpn service. How would I install logmein, or gotomypc
    there?

If you install this at work, and they've already told you NO, depending on
where you work, you could get fired.

If you are not to be working remotely then don't. If you are trying to get
to your HOME PC from work, then you're being unethical and should not be
    doing it.

It's more complicated than that because the entity that provides me with
net access does not employ me. Don't want to explain more.

It is getting tiresome to take files back and forth between home and work
(perfectly legit otherwise). Just tonight I had an urgent question from a
colleague and had to tell him to wait until tomorrow because I don't have
the pricelists of the Chrono-Log company with me. I'm sure he would have
liked his answers tonight, rather than tomorrow morning.

So, you work for a company and another one provides network access -
that's just like most of us. We work at one location and have our home
computer at another location. Additionally, it doesn't matter who provides
your "Net access" all that matters is who controls the two computers (the
remote computer and the local computer).

If the company you work for provides for remote connection permission then
you get it, if not then you don't.

So, present the issue to your Boss and tell him that it's impacting
your/their customers, most times they will find a way to support their
    customers.

You need to talk to the IT people at "company X" and see what facilities can be setup for
you. Whatever you do must be done overtly with their cooperation rather then covertly
    without their knowledge.

I've been using gtmypc for about 5 years without a single
problem. Anywhere, anytime in the world, as long as the
host machine is powered up, I have been able to get anything
I want and to transfer any files I needed to transfer.

On one or two occasions I had reason to call tech support -
they were knowledgeable, friendly and I didn't have to wait
    for hours.

    Leythos, David, Louise:
I do not want to do anything illegal. I am just at times not able to do
what I need to do from home, so remote access to my work computer would
be really nice. Since there appears to be no ethical way to do this, I
will not do it. Simple. But it will mean that ther is going be delays,
since I am beyond the postdoc's desire to work more then 10-12 hours per
day. Don't get heart disease or stroke for a while yet. The treatment
will have to wait for the rules <grin>.

My work PC is behind a proxy and corporate firewall. It works perfectly.
I help my father in Cyprus, a friend in Spain, and can log into my own
    home machines if I want.
