safe surfing habits, a good firewall, anti-virus and Spyware Terminator is
good enough for most. If you surf a bit on the wild side, I would add
more armor...I list the best choices on my website.

Does it have the context menu entry where you can right click on a file
and scan for spyware like Ewido?

Since none of the main AV products tested recently have the ability to
clear more than fifty percent of existing spyware, I always advise my
clients to have at least FOUR anti-spyware programs on their systems:
usually Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, SpywareBlaster (recommended
by Spybot right in the program), and Windows Defender. I'd also add two
on-demand anti-trojan products, A-Squared Free and AVG Anti-Spyware.
I've recently added SpywareGuard from Javacoolsoftware (the makers of
SpywareBlaster) that adds a real-time scanning component, live updates,
and IE download protection and browser hijack protection.

It really depends a lot on your surfing habits. Many folks get along fine
with just a router with firewall capability. I'm doing fine with AOL AVS,
Comodo PFW, and Spyware Terminator and I surf a bit wildly. I do use
Sandboxie for some events. Those that surf a bit more wildly, I recommend
adding more armor from the list of "picks" on my website.

My name happens to be Bear Bottoms...so I go by it. I meant what I said,
porn and hack sites have the highest risk factor for malware. I'm sure
you've heard the definition of "assume."

But actually I think not all porn sites are that dangerous.
Think about it - they KNOW why you're going there. They don't NEED to
slap adware and spyware on your machine.
A lot of sports sites and other cheesy commercial sites are where you get
a lot of adware and spyware. I have an occasional client whose kids are
constantly going to sports sites and athletic shoes sites and the like.
Her machine gets nailed from that. I need to install more protection on
her machine - or switch her to Linux altogether.

Actually, the last test I saw somewhere indicated that almost all of the
main AV programs - including Norton and McAfee - were able to detect and
clear fifty percent or LESS of trojans and spyware. Most of the AV
programs are oriented to viruses and worms, not trojans and spyware.
I recommend everyone run a specific anti-trojan tool in addition to any
other AV they run - either AVG Antispyware (formerly Ewido) and/or
A-Squared Free (both freeware to home users).
