I took the option of buying two licenses "forever." I like that it loads
fast and takes up few recourses.
Is there any way to tell what the most recent update is? I can't figure out
how often the database updates.

Why did you buy it without checking it out first?
Can I interest you in a share of the Eiffel Tower? Or the Statue of Liberty?
The full version updates automatically every 8hrs
The free one is manual.
