".email" file extension

I occasionally receive emails with the .email extension which I understand is a corruption of .eml extension used by Outlook and Outlook Express. I know to save and/or rename the former file with the latter extension to view it. My question is, exactly how does this corruption arise? It seems to be so ubiquitous and a few of my senders seem to have all their emails arrive with this.

As to why this corruption occurs, I'm not sure as I've never received an email with a .email extension. If it's just a few, I'd check with the senders to see what they are doing or if they are using a different program as their email client.
