Thanks for the tip. You're right. Right now, their web site
shows "4.7.871." My little short list is updated accordingly :

    ---

Free anti virus AVG (version 7.5):

Free anti virus avast! (home edition version 4.7)

I really appreciate all the help I can get in keeping this list
up to date. If you, or anyone else reading, know of other good
free ware links that would be worth adding here, please advise.

    I'll check into that one.

I've read too many complaints about the Defender program in the
a.p.s. group. I have to pass on that one.

I've heard about that one. I'll probably add it to the list.
I have to download it, and try it out for a few days first.

That is interesting. It says "an advanced rootkit detection
utility." I'll download it, and try it out for a few days. If I
can use it without much of a learning curve, I might add it to
    the list.

I hear that a lot. I've been using IE7 on XP without any
trouble, and the IE6 before that. But I know that most experts
frown on IE in general, and recommend other browsers, like
    Firefox.

Thanks again for the reply. I developed this "short list" mainly
to email my friends, who are not particularly computer savvy.

Some of the more advanced programs, and techinques, are probably
over their heads, and are probably over mine too.

When I find the time, I plan to. I want to avoid "overkill," with
too many programs running all at once. Based on what I've tried so
far, if I could only have one anti spy program installed, it would
probably be the commercial version of SAS. But as it is, I use the
free versions of all the programs I have listed, except for avast!,
since I already have AVG installed.

Thanks for the tip. I did see DHL's message regarding the "severe
denial of service attack" on gmer.net. I guess I never realized
what an important program experts hold "Gmer" to be. I'll have to
    try it out.

Awesome! I just downloaded what shows up as version
GMER 1.0.12.12011 from the first link that you listed before,
http://208.109.119.29/index.php. I just started running it,
it will be interesting to see what comes up.

In fact the last link you listed http://gmer.spywarefix.org/,
is the one I've added to my short list, pending the return of
    http://gmer.net, (or is it http://www.gmer.net?), if that's
    even in the cards.

    The URL should be; http://www.gmer.net
I don't know what the status is and if it will come back online. Numerous mirrors are being
setup such that a DDoS would NOT be effective against a slew of sites.

More sites are to be expected.

I spoke too soon. This GMER rootkit thing is definitely an
expert level program. It's way over my head, and is certainly
over the heads of those regular folks on my mailing list.

I'm sure it's a good program for those who understand what
it is, and how to make best use of it. It must be, since you
and others have recommended it, and since apparently hackers
have tried, successfully it seems, to bottleneck their web
site from public access. And with all the mirror sites
popping up, that means this must be a "must-have" program
    for all expert-level users.

No doubt about it. Gmer (and most anti RootKit utilities) are NOT for the novice or casual
user and requires OS knowledge to weed out the real Kernel constructs vs. malware
    constructs.

Gmer is the cream of that anti RootKit crop :-)

I believe you. I might try playing around with GMER again, but
that's going to be the extent of it. I think about advanced
programs that could mess with the computer's operating system,
like I was tinkering around in a military nuclear missile silo,
unsupervised. I'm really careful not to touch any buttons, knobs
or levers that I don't know exactly what they do.
