Desperate - can ping www.yahoo.com but can't browse

using either firefox or IE6.0 ... but I can browse in safe mode. I
tried all the solutions possible, including winsock fixs, ad-aware,
AVG, hijack this, spybot search and destroy ... all these junks didn't
    help!

Any experts here? i almost give it up.

Since your yahoo.com site doesn't work in two browsers, did you look in
your HOSTS file to see if you (or something else) added it to that
    listing?

Thanks for the reply. I forgot the mention that the hosts file is fine
    - there are no items in it.

Working in safe mode cast suspicion on a startup program, disable them all
using msconfig and see if that helps.

Note that msconfig is a simplistic tool which Microsoft provides to let
you see what Microsoft wants to let you know about regarding where
startup items are recorded. For one thing, it won't show events in Task
Scheduler that are configured to run on Windows startup. It won't list
WinLogon events. It won't list logon scripts. It's good for a starting
point but it is far from thorough.

You might also want to use SysInternals' AutoRuns to see what other
    places contain startup items.

So you can browse in Safe Mode but not when you do a normal Windows
startup? Okay, so what-all junk are you loading on a normal startup of
Windows? Obviously something that loads on Windows startup is
interferring with your ability to surf.
