    Process Help

Alright, I'll add more information in a minute, but I need to get these files up here.

I have a TON of processes running (58) at any given moment.

I'm always kept up on AVG, Spybot, Adaware. I'm not worried about Viruses/malware at all. I just want some opinoins on the processes that I have running and a good way to minimize the amount.

Here is my service list (right-click save as)

    Here are those which are either Not Required or Users Choice;
ati2evxx.exe>>>ATI External Event Utility EXE Module. This task can comsume lots of CPU resournces on some computers, but it can help with graphics card problems. Leave enabled unless it consumes too many CPU resources
brmfcwnd.exe>>>Brother scanner status monitor - can be started manually
cli.exe>>>System Tray access to ATI's CATALYST™ CONTROL CENTER. Note that this has "SystemTray" appended to CLE.exe in the "Command" column of MSCONFIG. Not required to run the control center - which is available via a right-click on the desktop
daemon.exe>>>Daemon Tools - used to map an image-file (.iso, .bin etc) to a virtual CD/DVD-drive. Users choice. Not required to run at start.
directcd.exe>>>Unless you use this on a frequent basis it isn't required and is available via Start -> Programs. Start the program before inserting a DirectCD formatted CD-RW in the drive. A re-boot is recommended if you close Adaptec DirectCD before re-opening it again later
inetinfo.exe>>> Executable used by MS Internet Information Server (IIS). If it's running, then so is IIS. Useful in knowing whether you require the patch for the Code Red worm. Comes with PWS (Personal Web Server) or NT4 and handles ASP-, PHP code (+ more) Users Choice
iPodService.exe>>> This service is used by Itunes for using your Ipod. If you do not use Itunes you can disable this service.
jusched.exe>>>checks for updates for SunJava updates. Can easily be run manually if you remember to do so.
mdm.exe>>> Used by developers for debugging. Those who have encountered it have unchecked it with no degradation in performance. May cause your computer to "hang" if you have MS Visual Studio installed and this disabled because it appears to take over error handling - hence a User Choice recommendatioon.
soundman.exe>>>System Tray icon for the Realtek AC97 Audio Sound Manager for AC97 onboard audio. Available via Start -> Settings-> Control Panel

I did not include EndItAll which was also running when you did your PrintScreen. I am assuming that you turned this on as this is not required to run all the time.
I usually recommend Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel which makes it easy to enable or disable unnecessary or user's choice programs at Start Up.

Most of those suggestions are right on the money, I see that ati-ccc and ati's cli consume resources and extend your startup time quiet a bit, the most common recommendation for this by other ati users is to isntall the omega driver's without .net or ccc, or install the previous ati catalyst whql signed drivers with ati-traytools rather than CCC; you can find more about the ccc issues at any forum that deals with ati omega drivers if you look for it.

IIS ? you'd have to disable each service individually, smtp, ftp, etc.. remember the ncacn_ip_?? your work's net admin probly knows it's not a good idea to mess with rpc since it's complicated but the individual services like smtp and ftp are similar to the netbios helper sssomething or other, the service needs to be switched to disabled for the port to actually close, probly won't take effect untill after you reboot and vm/rd may not work unless it starts it's own rpc port state.. etc.. gotta go for now.

    Judy,

    Thanks for the info!!!

ati2evxx.exe - Doesn't ever use tons of CPU. I am going to disable it though if it is taking a lot of time on startup, because that's where my issue resides. DISABLED

Sometimes I'll have to startup...then log off and log back on in order for all of my programs to load correctly (read: show up in the taskbar).

brmfcwnd.exe - Hasn't had any impact on my startup, and I don't even have the prgram loading in the tray, it just runs on startup and the "disappears."

cli.exe - I have always wanted to know how to disable this. It runs THREE instances and it bugs me. So I think I'll disable it, as I almost never use the command center for ATI. DISABLED

daemon.exe - This is fine. I love daemon-tools and that hasn't ever given me problems either.

directcd.exe - This also hasn't given me issues. I know how to turn it off, but it doesn't slow down my sytem at all. But I unchecked it in the properties for all of my CD drives. DISABLED

inetinfo.exe - This one is a must keep. I use RD on a daily basis. So this one I will leave.

iPodService.exe - I installed iTunes yesterday so I could download Grey's Anatomy for the fiancee. Well it didn't work and it's coming off, so this will be disappearing. UNINSTALLED

jusched.exe - This is useless from what I can tell. JAVA is very bad about notifying for updates. So I will also turn this off. DISABLED

mdm.exe - I will eventually get back in to my Visual Basic programming, and this is for Visual Studio.NET so I will keep this also.

soundman.exe - I am killing this one also. I don't use it and I know where the shortcut is for it if I need it. DISABLED

And EndItAll was only running so I could show you exactly what was running. I don't have it to run on startup, but it is a very useful program so it is in my arsenal.

Unless otherwise noted, I have disabled these programs through Startup CPL. That's an AWESOME utility.

    Thanks Judy!!

And anybody else who wants to chime in feel free.

PS - Cauzomb, thank you for your help earlier on GAIM. I left my FD at work so I don't have any of that information right now. But we will see what this does for me.

...Startup CPL. That's an AWESOME utility.
I agree Gizmo...I have used it for several years. One thing I like about it is that it is so easy to go back in and re-enable something with it. It is also nice because "some" things insist on putting themselves back in Start if you use it...AIM, Quicktime are two of them. But with the Startup CPL all you have to do is if you use one of those and don't want the auto-start you just go back in and remove it via the Startup CPL. Now I will tell you this, with those two programs especially, they will just ad another instance of themselves in Start up not just place the checkmark. So if you go in and remove the checkmark of the new one you may get a message that you already have a disabled entry for the program and you must delete one before removing the checkmark. Just right Click the extra entry and delete without problems. I always check Startup CPL after installing a new program. If it is not necessary for the running of the computer and it shows up in Startup I just remove the checkmark from there.

I also agree with your fiancee on the Grey's Anatomy music, LOVE IT. But the iPod program must be difficult. I don't have an iPod but my granddaughter got her's for Christmas last year. The Grey's music was one thing she had trouble with downloading for it. My daughter, her mom, works for an ad agency and she had to have their computer tech do it for them. Now there is some way he downloads it and then my daughter takes it home and puts it on her daughter's iPod because they couldn't do it on their home computer. Haven't a clue how they do it but I will ask her about it, maybe she can give me a hint on how it is done. She said that was the only downloads they have had trouble with for the iPod.

Well, this has already helped a buch. It took a minute to startup this time, but that's because not only did I change what was to run, but I also uninstalled iTunes. I will let you know what goes on tomorrow as that will be the real test...

My computer used to run between 56 and 60 processes at any given time, now, even with T-bird, Gaim and FF running I am at only 48 processes.

So for now, Thanks a TON!!

Yup. My computer worked fine this morning. And the drop in processes makes me really happy.

The re-enabling of AIM on startup, and all the ads/spyware it adds, is one reason I use Gaim instead. It's MUCH more user friendly, it's like Trillian, but less bloated. And there is absolutely NO affiliation with AIM. But you can use AIM/ICQ, Yahoo, MSN, IRC, Jabber, Gadu Gadu, Groupwise, Napster, SILC, SIMPLE, and Sametime. So you really won't ever need another one.

And with Grey's Anatomy there was supposed to be a way to download the movies from iTunes, but I couldn't find them. So away it went.

But thanks for all the help. This really makes my day. It's nice to know that my computer will actually startup without being bombarded.

Well.....I think it happened again...due to this, I am having a problem on bootup...something keeps hanging...here's the SS....I know it should be something stupidly simple, but for the life of me I can't figure out what it is.

I should also say that ever since this started, browsing or doing anything with the internet at all has slowed down...
