Recently, I experienced problems with two programs that use browsing
services from Internet Explorer: Microsoft Money and WebSite-Watcher.
After A LOT OF FIDDLING ABOUT, I found the problem.
For some reason, very restrictive premissions were in effect for
certain of my registry keys under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. These keys
included .html, .htm, htmlfile, cssfile, and a few others. These
restrictive permissions made it impossible to reinstall Windows
Internet Explorer 7. That is how I discovered the permissions problem.
I managed to delete all of these keys, and then I reinstalled Windows
Internet Explorer 7. Then I altered the permissions of the registry
keys.
After all that, my issue with MSMoney and WebSite-Watcher vanished.
I still don't know what is causing the permissions problem in the
first place. But I am concerned that one of my anti-malware programs
is at fault. I am using:
Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall
AVG Anti-virus
Webroot Spysweeper
Spybot S&D
Lavasoft Ad-aware
What do you think? Do any of these programs lay down restrictive
permissions on registry keys? Trying to protect me from something?
Thanks for any suggestions!
